3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 BBB63 (5039) - La Porte, USA - MAY 5, 2006
Growler Dark Lord Prerelease Party: Near opaque with a small head and some lace. The aroma has notes of oats and roasty malt, chocolate, and grassy hops. The flavor has a good balance of toasted malt and mocha with the grassy and lightly fruity hops. The mouth feel is dry and refreshing but way too thin body, even more so for a stout, ultimately it is simply a serviceable beer. Note if called West Coast, should not there be some piney hop?
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hopslovin (194) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - SEP 7, 2008
Draft at MABC. Pitch black pour with creamy tan head. Roasted malt & whiff of hops on the nose. Roasted malt and slight hop bitterness in the taste. Nice balance but I would like it to be BIGGER. A bit thin on the mouthfeel. Dry, bitter chocolate, roasted malt finish. Nice drinking, but underwhelming.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 kseecs16 (1090) - Naperville, Illinois, USA - MAR 12, 2008
Draught at the pub. Opaque brown thin tan head. Nice, full malty flavor, roast sweet notes of chocolate. Some lacing. Med body with nice lingering bitterness. I did not notice it being as thin as other mentioned, will have to rerate from the growler I had. Actually was pleasantly surprised by the depth and flavor.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 bdigital (637) - Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA - JUL 17, 2007
Draft from brewpub. Pours a rich black color with quick diminishing, rocky tan head. Aroma of roasted malt with some minimal chocolate and coffee hints. After it sat for a few minutes it opened up and revealed some dark fruit qualities. Big malty taste with a subtle mocha flavor that seemed just right. Has a nice hoppy bitterness kick at the end that surprised me. Pretty thin overall which is my main complaint with it, but all in all a good brew that I’ll refill my growler with.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 jsquire (2484) - St. Marys, Ohio, USA - DEC 4, 2006
On cask at the pub. Very dark beer with a slow cascading head that ended up being a stiff creamy beige cap of sticky foam. Nose of dusty chocolate and dry dog food. Astingent roasted grain taste with malted chocolate and an almost raspberry hint. Finish is burnt coffee and harsh grass. It is thin in body.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Tmoney99 (7300) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 15, 2006
Draft at MAPB. Poured a black color with an average creamy brown head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Light toasted cereal aroma. Medium body with a watery texture. Medium sweet flavor with a bitter finish of short duration. Had two brews and this one clearly did not meet my expectations.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 goldtwins (4320) - Nesconset, New York, USA - MAY 8, 2006
Growler @ DL06: Poured a clear dark brown color. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and a creamy roast. Roasty flavor with light coffee notes at the end. Acidic/CO2 bite. Light to medium body that finishes thin. Light bitterness on the finish.
3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 hopscotch (7542) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAY 2, 2006
Growler... DLD06... Black ale with a small, creamy, light brown head. Notes of chocolate, coffee and light vanilla in the nose. Well-balanced flavor with some mildly burnt notes. Light-bodied and watery with medium carbonation. Short, clean finish. Thanks go out to thedm and hotstuff for sharing their growler.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 1FastSTi (3000) - Glendale, Wisconsin, USA - APR 30, 2006
Thanks to thedm and hotstuff. The beer the aroma is grainy and chocolatey. The beer poured to a thin bodied beer and a light tan head. The flavor is chocolate and toasted grains. Not very good unfortunately. The palate is thin and watery.
2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 temporrari (361) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - MAR 25, 2006
Pretty dark beer. Thin, short lived head. Aroma is practically non existant. Very mild roasty malt. The flavor is a different story, however. Quite a bit of green hops complimented by some roasty grains. Overall it’s fairly bitter. Fairly tasty. But what really kills this beer is it’s lack of aroma and body. Thin, thin, thin. This beer is just begging for some viscosity. This seems to be a standard issue for MA, all their beers are watery. With this brew, it’s like they are scared to brew something with a little substance because they’re afraid it won’t sell as well. If the brewers are reading this, please change the recipe and give this beer a thicker, creamier body. It’d be so much better.
