UPDATED: AUG 18, 2010 This beer is a clear pale orange-amber color with a medium thin off-white head that recedes quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet spices and honey. Light body with flavors of honey, malt, wheat and spices. The finish is wheat and grain with a sweet aftertaste. Slightly below average overall.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 JaBier (3249) - Capital City, Ohio, USA - OCT 10, 2008
First ever rating, here we go. Sample from 22oz bottle at the Brewkeeper tasting at Blacklick Wine and Spirits on 10/9/08. Semi-opaque amber color. Aroma is a malty sweetness with honey and marshmallow splashed in. Not detecting much wheat here. Flavor is honey sweetness, but I didn’t go into sugar shock. Finishes thin. Fairly enjoyable for a style I typically don’t care for.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 BeerVirgin72 (879) - Pickerington, Ohio, USA - OCT 10, 2008
Bottle sampled at Blacklick Wine and Spirits Tasting held on 10-9-08. Poured a dark golden amber color, a bit darker then I was expecting for a wheat beer. Sweet bread smell. Flavor was sweet and malty. Could not detect a lot of honey, but this was a nice drinkable wheat.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Moggman (235) - Columbus, USA - OCT 10, 2008
Bottle. Pours light amber with off white head. Aroma is wheat and a little grains. Taste is sweet, but not as sweet as some honey wheats. Very drinkable, mild finish.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Tmoney99 (7300) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - SEP 20, 2008
Bottle from The Brew Keeper. Poured clear dark orange color with an average frothy white head that diminished slowly and produced fair lacing. Moderate sweet dough aroma. Medium body with soft carbonation. Moderate sweet flavor with a smooth sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 lb4lb (2026) - Austin, Texas, USA - SEP 5, 2008
Bottle in trade from miketd. Thanks Mike!
Pours a nice clear amber with fluffy beige head. Smells like musty, strange sweetness. Not particularly honey like. Taste is about right for what I’d expect in a honey wheat beer and has a nice aftertaste of those flavors that linger. Wheat bread like and a bit sweet after a full glass. Drinkable and delivers on the name.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Brigadier (1940) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - AUG 27, 2008
22 oz bottle
For some reason this was the first of several new bottled releases from the Mad Brewer that I picked up on a beer run. Perhaps it was because the others were either seasonals like a pumpkin beer or heavier styles such as barleywines. This wasn’t bad but simply average in all aspects. I would not recommend dropping even $5.99 on this unless you must have every Mad Brewer beer available.
Aroma / Appearance - A one finger white head surged atop a carbonated amber body. The nose was sweet bread with a drizzling of honey. Overall it was lifeless, bland and lacking much in the way of presence. The good news is that at least it looks good.
Flavor / Palate - The taste is hard to pin down until after almost a full pint. It takes that long for the whole wheat bread and hops combination to stick to the throat for more than two seconds. It’s clean, simple and uninspiring. Totally average in all respects it makes a nice alternative to mass produced swill but that’s all.
