The West 12 is a great trappist-style beer. It has a malty aroma and a dark brown color. It has a strong "belgian" flavor (and a potent kick), but it is slightly sweet. The aroma and taste improves as the beer warms up in the glass. This beer is not for everyone, but if you like strong belgian ales, the West 12 is a "must try".
pantanap (659), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 3, 2008 22oz bottle. thanks to jeremy for a taste of this....poured a dark plum brown with a thin wispy off-white head....aroma of fresh dark fruit, bananas, and cloves. it smelled pretty young next to MOAB if that’s possible....flavors of bananas, clove, sweet caramel malt. this didn’t really remind me of an abt/quad but more of a strong dark wheat beer. one positive note is that is really had a smooth, full mouthfeel....glad to try this one. I found this on a visit to Rozi’s while looking for newly released Green Flash products. This surpassed all expectations for a $6.99 beer from a brewery who hasn’t yet made anything that was exceptional. The closest they’ve come so far in my experience to this masterpiece was the White Storm. I may have to pick up more of this when it is rebrewed - by then I may have some spare room in the cellar.
Aroma / Appearance - The sandy colored head topped a caramel colored body which was very fluid. Simpler than its namesake (but also far cheaper and accessible to me) it combined the smell of chocolate, vanilla beans, cinnamon, citrus, mahagony and malt in a way that reminded me of a slightly thinner St Bernardus Abt 12.
Flavor / Palate - Room temperature bittersweet chocolate melded with coffee beans and a dry hard cheese taste. Next came moist velvet cake before the orange and chocolate finish. Exceptionally cohesive throughout it flowed seamlessly from one taste to the next. If this came in 12 oz bottles I would definitely pick up a six pack to keep around. masonjer (388), Lansing, Michigan, USA Jul 1, 2008 Tasted at Kanarama. This is labeled as a quadruple, but I found this to be more of a heavy wheat beer. So I was confused when rating. Poured a dark brown/plum color. clove and banana on the nose. Taste is much the same, fresh banana, cloves, plum. Beautiful silky mouthfeel that was nice. Whatever this beer is, I enjoyed it. goldtwins (3668), Nesconset, New York, USA May 31, 2008 Poured a hazed deep brown with a persistent (lacing and head for the full time the beer was in the glass) medium sized tan head. Very nice semi-sweet aroma. Fruity with some yeasty esters and phenols. Notes of grapes, plums and a hint of banana and buulbe gum. Fruity and yeasty flavors with some notes of chocolate and a touch of smoke. The finish is semi-dry and very warming. Medium-full bodied. Nice beer.
