BOTTLE. (BB May ’12 drunk July ’15) Poured black with a lively dark tan head.. Subtle nose, dark malt, coffee.. Dark roasted malt up front, some heavy bitter coffee with an oaky wine punch at back end.. Once it warmed up flavour was more noticeable.. Interesting for 3 years after BB.. Sourced RW

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A-- Poured a dark cola color and settled black with a few touches of ruby at the bottom of the glass. Nice reverse cascading light brown head that built to two fingers before receding leaving ABV legs in the process. Good head retention on this.
S-- At first it was mostly chocolate and Carmel, once it warmed the Liquorice root really came alive and sort of pushed aside the chocolate and Carmel smells.
T-- Chocolate, Carmel and licorice. Fresh licorice really. Smooth but slightly acidic.
M-- Smooth, very smooth tasting. Touches of chocolate and Carmel sweetness in the front, followed by more licorice in the mid and finishes with a odd but good milk chocolate/ acidic/ sweet finish. Slightly high carbonation but it makes up for it in smoothness. Not heavy at all, a little thin at times but the flavor profile really does this well
O-- Not really a RIS, more like a plain old stout or sweet stout

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
640mL bottle. Poured medium cola brown with a dense tan head.. looked good in the glass. The aroma was very sweet, with licorice and chocolate leading, and toasted, lightly-smoked malts and dark fruit behind.. fresh kick on the back of the nose, but there was very little hop or alcohol presence. The flavor found sweet licorice, vanilla, and light smoked malt at the core.. light, dry earth and peppery bitterness surrounded.. more of the same malts on the sweet finish.. not terribly complex, but tasty. Medium-bodied and grainy on the palate, and sweet as mentioned.. a touch of sour-ish malty character showed at times, and was a welcome departure from the sweets.. overall a solid brew, but not so "imperial".

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Tasting from June 2011.
Produces up a lifeless, used motor oil black, oily upon the glass as it is swirled. there was little fluff atop from a violent pour into the glass but this is rapidly fading. Well they got the ’noir’ part right, just waiting for the release of a ’Stout Blanche’ now. Aroma has a tinge of smoked fish amongst notes of Belgian chocolate, leather and rich molasses, and a presence of alcohol spice. Smooth, oily mouthfeel. Sweet, rich molasses start, dusty dark chocolate and roasted carob mid-palate before a smoky, burnt grain swallow that has goo length. Little evidence of the alcohol as a positive. touch of the salty,. smoked fish develops too. No ’wow’ in this one. Mild malt bitterness, no real character, pretty average. 2.8 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
640 ml bottle. Pours the promised ’noir’ with a decent tan head that dissipates fairly quickly. Taste is full ahead roasted malt, although as the beer warms, some sweetness and a slightly strange smokiness. Finish is quite dry, with a bit of metallic tang at the end. Not sure it all works together, and it’s not really sessionable, but not bad as a one off.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Black and tan head. Mocha, caramel, licorice and some berry aroma. Sweet taste then dry bitterness. Little thin on the palate. Big robust stout it’s not, though fairly appealing to the masses.
