An English style robust Porter brewed with imported pale, crystal, black and chocolate malts to lend the dark color with ruby highlights and dark malt flavors. This is a beer supposedly created in London in the early 18th Century to slake the thirst of the Market Porters, men who carried all the produce at markets throughout the city. The hops used are English varietals like Challenger for bitterness and a good amount of First Gold to balance all the malt notes.

Draught @ Mad Fox Brewing Company - Glover Park Taproom, Washington, DC. Pours hazy very dark ruby / copper brown with small off-white head. Clear aroma of roast, with notes of malt and fruity and hoppy touches. Bitter, roasty flavour with sweetish notes of malt and yeast amd touches of coffee. Roasty aftertaste. Soft carbonation. Decent.

Appearance: dark brown, garnet edging, short tan head. Aroma: roasty coffee, dark chocolate, lightly bitter resinous hops. Taste: burnt black coffee, dark chocolate, hint of molasses and vanilla and earthy hops. Finish: lingering dry, smooth bitterness and general roasty notes. Notes: Perfectly good porter; palate was a little pricklier than I prefer, but good flavors and aroma. Draught at the source.

Tap at Mad Fox. Clear, deep red pour. Weak tan head. Nose is heavier dark cherries and milk chocolate. Some caramel and maple syrup. Big cherry like Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream. Taste is lighter bodied, bitter, sharper bitter with cherry dark chocolate, raw cocoa. Palate is clean and quick, lighter for style. Very nice. Fruity and cherry heavy. The fiance loved it.

Kask @ mad fox - pours dark red with 2 fingers of head. Aroma is mildly smokey with notes of peat and malt. Palate is a tad thin, taste is mildly bitter. It’s a mild porter, hard to believe its 6%.
