Tap. Pours clear chestnut with a small tan head and no lacing. Aroma is more or less all whiskey. Whiskey also dominates the flavor with some spruce, caramel malt and a ton of green apple all over the place. A bit of tartness, lightly sweet. Light to medium body, light warming finish.

On draft at the brewpub at the Robert Burns beer and scotch dinner. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a thin off white head. Raisin and vanilla nose. Dark red cherries, raisin, vanilla, oak and licorice. Lingering boozy finish. Nice.

Great American Beer Festival, 2012. Dark brown. Appropriate malt flavor with sweet dried fruit. Some bourbon, but it is light. The oak is light also but it is there. Thick palate.

murky sepia, light white head. Nose is heavy vanilla and wood, bourbon obvious. Flavor shows more chocolate and bourbon, light oat and syrup, very sweet with thin body, sugar sticking everywhere.

Tap at Smoke and Barrel. Poured a full haze deep mahogany. Scant head. Nose is heavy sweet tomato paste, thicker bourbon barrel, heavy sugar. Taste is richly malty, maple heavy. Tomato paste is a bit excessive. Very intense barrel character.

UPDATED: AUG 4, 2012 Draft at Smoke and Barrel. Rich mahogany pour. Nose and flavor are marked by lovely plum and raisin dark fruit notes melded with toffee, caramel, and touches of boozy wood and light tannic bite. Smooth and drinkable for the ABV. A fine brew.

Mahogany pour with frothy tan head and lace. Super sweet caramel, dried fruit, and oak aroma. Caramel, brown sugar, earthy hops, and a very nice warmth. The 9% is well hidden. Full bodied with good carbonation.

Served on draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear dark copper color with a thin creamy offwhite head. Decent head retention. Aroma of wood, whisky, maple, toffee, berries and a faint hop finish. Amazing. The taste is strong whisky notes, vanilla, wood, toffee, caramel and dark fruits. Medium-full bodied, low carbonation, significant alcohol warmth. Granted I’m partial to Scotch ales, but this is a damn good beer.

Close to pitch black, small wispy off-white head. Aroma is oaked vanilla, notes of sweet roasted malts. Flavor is mellow vanilla notes, bit roasted chocolate. Great!
