Draft at Brouwer’s. Pours a murky caramel brown with a grayish tan. Nose is wheaty sweet bread with honey, apple, peach and light caramel. Sweet honey apple up front with peppery wheat and more sweet maltiness. Finishes up kind of peppery dry and dusty with a chemical taste. Not much depth for me and not like other wheat wines I’ve had. Although, most seem to differ a bit from brewer to brewer. Guess I’m just finding what qualities in one I like best.

"diggin this style as a change of pace from american barleywines. sweet, but not overly so, with a wonderful fruity aroma. just enough hops to balance the fruitiness and the malt. pours a dark amber. thick bodied. well done."

(From notes) On tap @ 38 Degree Alehouse, Alhambra, CA (end of 2009). Brown color, murky. Nice layer of foam, retaining. Aroma: fruit (berries, raspberries), malty sweet. Flavor is fruity sweetish, lightly bitter. Medium bodied. I really had the impression that fruit juice was added. If so, I would be interested in trying this pure (w/o juice).

8 ounce sample on tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Simply listed as "Mad River Wheat Wine". The aroma on this is sweet, chewy, and vinous. Some caramel notes are also there with some paper hints and a little oxidation. Moderately hazy light amber/dark copper body with a smallish off-white head. Starts sweet, sticky, and sugary. Mild wheat maltiness and dusty flavors in the middle. Finishes with some ethanolic booziness and herbal piney hop bitterness. Some leather also comes through in the end. A pretty big beer that is a little rough around the edges.

Deep orange pour. Honey and mild notes of cereal grain on the nose. Tons of those grains in the flavor, and a big alcohol bite. This one has a somewhat sprightly carbonation, pricking your tongue like a champagne. Citrus is up front, and it doesn’t have anywhere near the gravity I’m used to in barley wines. Disappointing.

On tap at Beer Revolution poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of sherry, plum, raisin and toffee. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of sherry, plum, raisins and toffee with a smooth lingering fruity finish.

On draft at The Federal, Durham. Never having even heard of this, had to give it a go. Ruby pour with a nice fluffy head, the nose is super sweet, coconut pie and Boston creme with some boozy heat. Mouthfeel is fairly lively, which is to the beer’s benefit as it avoids cloying slickness. Some hops are detectable to balance things out a bit, but it’s big beer and is an enjoyable confection.

Intense opening aroma of hoppy caramel alcohol, wham, like you want to slow it down to see what’s all there. slightly cloudy amber-brown glow, with minimal tan head (on tap at belmont station.) strong in the mouth, with a little fizz. I like bourobon but the strength of it keeps me cautious-- this brew tastes like cold slightly diluted whiskey ameliorated with hops and some syrupy shadows.

Tap @ Johnny Brown’s. Pours a cloudy orange amber with a frothy off white head with decent lacing. Nose was fairly hoppy with some candied tree fruits and booze in the nose. Very big on the palate with candied apricots, booze and a nice bitter finish.
