3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark ruby/orange. Light spotty lacing and no head really. Maybe a thin film. Big hop aromas. Bitter and some citrus. Sweet malt backing. Lots of caramel. Some roast. Some vinous qualites. Maybe a touch of wood. Flavor is big time bitter with alcohol backing. Tangy hops. Citrus and floral. Some figs. Caramel and a touch of brown sugar. Thick and chewy with a big finish of bitter alcohol.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Orange/brown in colour. Aroma was very hoppy, lots of citrus and some caramel malt. Flavour had a very smooth mouthfeel, mild hop, some chocolate, mild alcohol, high carbonation and some butter. Finishes smooth, long. Good, but just a little light tasting.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep amber, very little head. Aroma had elements of caramel, blood oranges, and alcohol. Flavors also had citric elements that strayed toward orange, along with a healthy dose of caramel flavors. Medium bodied. Alcohol component was not well integrated, which detracted from an otherwise good beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2001 version: Pours a nice and hearty beef stew stock amber color. Small white head that leaves pretty nice lacing. Aroma is like candy, sweet and some sourness. Some maple syrup in there as well. Flavor is sweet and tart, in a citrusy sort of way. Really nice caramel flavors in there as well. Body is actually much more thin than expected but it works with this beer for some reason. Interesting beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2003 bottle: Clear orange/red color with almost no head. Medicinal citrus aroma, full bodied. Starts sweet and ends even more sweet. Bright orangy character.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Brown color with red and orange hues. Medium sized head of off-white, very fine bubbles. Smells sweet and hoppy (acid), pine, sugar, alcohol. Taste is mellow for a barleywine: sweet brown sugar and raisins up front, quickly turns to lemony and bitter hops. Aftertaste is more developed than usual, warm with grapes cherries, plums and alcohol. I enjoyed this, a beer with character. Sampled from a 12 oz bottle purchased at Lee & Edwards in Roanoke, VA.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
1998: This barley wine pours with a very cloudy orange-amber hue topped with no head and there is no lacing to speak of. There's a lot of floaters in this one as well. This is just wierd! The aroma is sweet and minty with a liquid smoke, teriaki, soy sauce note. Everything somehow comes together with a candy cane like aroma. The flavor is very sweet and candy like with slight bitter, minty notes and hints of teriaki. This beer is just freakin' wierd, but for some reason I kinda like it. Medium bodied and smooth, without much carbonation.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Deep brown/ruby color, slightly cloudy with tiny bubble off-whiet head. Malty, somewhat sour? aroma. Uh-oh. Deeply malty with sour aftertaste and little hop flavor. Very disappointing. The last time I had this (a few years ago) I thought it was great. This is definatley not the same recipe as then. Too bad.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: NOV 18, 2005 Brown pour with smallish head. Caramel malt nose and sweet citrus malty taste. Dry finish. Could use some aging. Re-rated after 1 year and the taste really comes through. A nice sweet barleywine indeed. Two years and it has peaked, so 1.5 is the way to go here.
