A nice black ale. Not much aroma, but it makes up for it in the mouth. Pours black with a tan head. Taste is a nice dark roasty malt flavor. Hops are there but compliment the malt.
Great mouth feel. Great aftertaste! Wouldnít know the alcohol was so high!

Serious Madness is seriously thick and dark brown with tinges of crimson when held up to the light. It has a large mountain range head the color of my wood cabinets: a semi-dark reddish brown. The head runs away quickly, leaving a light film across the top of the liquid and some nice spiderwebs on the sides. Smells of dark melted chocolate, apples, and roasted caramel malts. The first taste that hits is smoke, like taking a whiff from a chimney at outback steakhouse. The malts must be heavily roasted, verging on burnt. A fruity, raisiny sweetness builds as the beer warms, and a fritzy blast of alcohol warmth hits at the swallow. The roasted flavor really comes between sips. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Better than average use of hops, which makes the drink crisper and more refreshing than I expected. Hoppiness, roasted character, smokiness, sweetness, bitterness...they all blend beautifully together. Seriously good.

"leaves an impression like an imperial black lager. pours lighter than a stout, like a black ale should. aroma is lots of roasted malt and hops. feel is medium-full...fuller than i thought it would be, but a little too much carbonation. goes down warm. the flavor is pretty stinkin good. loads of roasted choclate malt, coffee, hops...dry bittersweet finish. nice beer."

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
This beer poured from a 12 oz bottle at about 45-50F. Looked near perfect, with a large tan head over a black body with dark mahogany edges, The head is durable and leaves plenty of splotchy lacing.
Medium+ body; silky smooth; Light+ carbonation.
The aroma promises a load of dark malts and has hints of chocolate.and coffee. The flavor follows. Itís rich and moderately complex, It becomes increasingly bitter going into the aftertaste. Higher ABV is partially evident but well integrated and eloquant.

This beer is delicious. Plenty of hops for a black ale. The beer has a great malt character with a hint of coffee undertone. Full bodied and delicious!

Reminds me of dark beers I've had in Germany, though a little less flavorful and with a noticeable desire to become an American imperial (stout), i.e., a little sweetness is present. It's a good beer, but this latter aspect may be it's downfall. Either go full-speed toward imperial and add the flavor in addition to the alcohol, or keep it more sessionable and avoid the alcohol prominence. I liked this beer in my first few sips more than the later ones.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12oz bottle, from Jungle Jimís in Fairfield. Very dark brown, near black color. Good thin khaki head, leaves good spread of lace. Looks good, aside from the big ugly noticeable clumps of yeast in the body. Wonder how old this is? Moderate bitter taste, moderate to bigger sweet, light spicy bite to the finish. Definitely a bigger earthy hoppiness. Some dark chocolate, lightly spicy. Some toasty malt. Some molasses type sweetness. Some musty old-taste to it. Bit of smoke. Medium to bigger body. Kind of slick. Lighter, lightly rough carbonation. Good chewiness to the texture. Light bite in the finish. Kind of a lingering cloying. Alright black ale. A bit too much of a bite and sweet maltiness for me, that lingers in the finish. Probably an older, poorly kept bottle. Mad River... If your proud of your product, date your bottles.

Pours a half finger of head on a black body.
The aroma is roasted malt, sour milk and grass. Itís not a great smell.
The taste starts mildly sweet, then some lemon bitterness in the middle to end. It has a milk flavor to it all.
The texture is crisp and soft around the sides.
The sour smell and milk flavor really through this beer off.

Tap pour in a pint glass at Devilís Advocate. Black ale with good lacing. Aroma is a little smoky with some toffee/caramel. Taste definitely has some smoke elements and a bitter hint of dark chocolate. Very smooth and easy to drink. Aftertaste is bitter but satisfying. Definitely with a try!

Bottle, shared with Parksy and Grippitis. Near black with a lasting brown head. Dark malts really play second fiddle to bitter, citric hops here. Very hoppy, but strangely, a tad thin despite the ABV.
