11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Oct 13, 2005 Bottle. Opens with no suggestion of carbonation and pours a deep black color. Decent brown head forms and fades to a ring at a moderate pace leaving moderate lacing behind. Rich chocolate aroma with a touch of roasted grain and coffee. Medium to full bodied, carbonation is there at a low level which enhances a fuller mouthfeel. Chocolate and coffee flavors blend quite nicely, decent bitterness from heavily roasted grains and some hop. Quite well done. SDalkoholic (1186), Chula Vista, California, USA Oct 12, 2005 Roasty and toasty aroma with a presence of coffee bean like scents and a chocolate and malt background. Appearance is strong opaque black topped by a brown tan head. Flavor is also strong and shows the same charactetistics as the aroma except the roast malt isnt as blunt and the flavor shows more sign of coffee than chocolate. Amazing little stout based on its low alcohol percent and popularity. grat (433), ST. Louis, Missouri, USA Oct 7, 2005 Wow...this beer has been right under my nose for over a year now and I never tried it...what a loss! Deep tar and rubber tires. Mocha khaki head. Thick as cough medicine. Nose isdistinctively like a really fruity pinot noir. Winey and roasted. Slight oaty sweetness. Vanilla in the background. Red wine up front, oaky vanilla behind it. Flavors fall just short of the nose. More roasted than subtle. Pinot noir on the tongue as well at first. This gives way to a slight bourbon...very slight. Roasty in the finish. Scathes and bathes the tongue with flavor. Hidden sweetness in the background. Thick as tar on the tongue...good beer. Kinz (2179), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Sep 1, 2005 Much better than I remember this one being. I remembered this as being a weak imitator of the SN Stout. What I found was a lush black beer, deep tan head, elegant aroma of chocolate and slightly burnt coffee. Flavor was of chocolate liquor and espresso, full bodied and sophisticated. Very nice stout. Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA Aug 16, 2005 You could smell chocolate aroma when you get a whiff of this one. Black body with dark tan small head that disipated. Flavor was more of roasted malts and some hops also detected for a good balanced beer. Smooth creamy on the palate with a roasted chocolate aftertaste. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA Aug 9, 2005 Thanks to Secret Santa. Poured very black, thick, with a huge fizzy brown head. The depth of the caramel and coffee aroma is astounding. There are traces of hops in this nose as well. Wonderful lacing. The taste is bitter coffee chocolate and a small hint of hop pine to end. The bitter after taste is great. The carbonation is a good compliment to the thickness of the mouth feel. This is a very nice stout, why the low ratings? papajohn (1054), San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA Aug 1, 2005 Darker than coal with a small creamy, light brown, diminishing head. Aroma is rich chocolate. Flavor starts with coffee and cream followed by a little dark chocolate and finishing with a light dry coffee bitterness. Medium body, creamy texture. AndyJ1981 (1), USA does not count Jul 24, 2005 Haven’t seen any Mad River in the Minneapolis area, so this was a treat...used to be one of my favorites while going to school at Humboldt State, and there are so many good beers to choose from in that area. Nice dark, syrupy pour. No head retention though. Beautiful soft aroma, chocolate and coffee aroma as well as taste. Careful balance between roasted malts and bittering hops for a nice lasting taste on your palate.
