Jun 13, 2005 Fruity, port-like aroma; substantial chocolate and roasty assertion; some cherry and metallic hints; sweet, roasted caramel flavor with a burnt date and raisin tinge; the bitterness comes from smooth, black roasted malts (that seem more like caraffe rather than black patent) and not hops; somewhat acidic; nice brew!

Jun 2, 2005 12oz bottle-pours pitch black with a nice brown head. slightly viscus/oily pour. Lots of burnt grain husks, chocolate, char and coca here in the aroma. flavors are not as strong as the flavor, mostly bringing out the coca and char notes. body is medium and somewhat fluffy. Some astringency in the finish where the flavors dont come together right and a touch of acidic notes do the flavor no favor. an average stout.

Jun 2, 2005 Black body with a thin dark orange head. The aroma is pine sap with some rich caramel. There is also chocolate. The taste is coffee and light chocolate. There is also a little bit of wood. A very smooth stout. The mouthfeel is slightly sticky and thick. This is a good session stout.

May 22, 2005 12 oz bottle. Thin orange head atop a black brew that looks like thin motor oil (I mean that in a good way! ;-) Aroma and flavor were typical of a stout. This isn’t a bad beer, but there are better stouts out there. Surprised to see this ranked at 87!

May 5, 2005 Updated: Mar 6, 2009From a 12 oz bottle. Poured very black with a nice brown head and nice chunks of lacing. Feels thick and rich on the tongue. Very nice odors with a smoky coffee and chocolate dominating. Very smooth drink. Flavor are excellent but what makes this stand out is one of the best palates ever. Feels almost rich enough to eat with a spoon. Finish is chocolate. Very nicely done.

Apr 29, 2005 Love the smokey aroma....Old Dominion has a stout much like this. Pours black with a hint of ruby. Beige head without much lacing. No matter, sweet taste of roasted malt and coffee. I like this a lot

Apr 25, 2005 Black, semi-thick appearance. Minimal tan head. Smells of chocolate and roasted malts; bitter coffee nodes. Fairly rich, dry and coffee-like in flavor. Body is borderline thick; waxy on the palate. Thick malts paired with roasted barley contribute to a good bitterness. Finish is primarily chocolate covered espresso beans. Pretty good stout. Thanks to tpkenned for this birthday treat!

Apr 24, 2005 Nice pure black body, low carbonation, and a very dark orange/brown head. Aroma is intense with roast and floral hops. Chocolate, roast, and toasted malts for flavor and a great smooth finish, with a little hop bite.
