Pours a very dark brown with a medium off white head.

The aroma is roasty and mildly smoky, the coffee notes are enjoyable and some dark fruit sneaks in a little bit. This would smell a lot better if there wasn’t a bit of cheap vodka character to it, other than that it’s great.

The flavor is mildly sweet & roasty but only lightly bitter. Some ashiness is present, a bit of currant, semi sweet chocolate, and the beer has a light smoky twang.

Smells of chocolate, molasses, barley and nuts. Appearance is an intense dark mahogany with no foam. Taste is moderate flavors of coffee, molasses, caramel, nuts, and toffee. Light syupy malt texture with moderate carbonation. Overall, this porter is decent. Moderate malty flavors with noticable alcohol. Nothing really stands out. I’d rate this a C.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2012 Dark brown but reddish brown(mahagony)clear up to the light,1/2 inch foamy head with some lacing. Aroma is chocolate hints of sweet smoke mostly a pleasant chocolate aroma with some mild sweet malt/breadiness. Mouthfeel is smooth somewhat creamy at first then hops a roast with maltiness finishing with some sweet notes with cherry a little smoke then more chocolate and an herbal like bittering, some woody dryness maybe a bit of vanilla or carmel. Definalty hits a scottish malty mark of a porter, you get that.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle at at Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring, MD. Bottle did not include the word "Scotch," although it was otherwise identical to photos of "Mad River Scotch Porter" on the web. This did not have the big smoked flavors mentioned by other reviewers. Opaque, nearly black, brown with 3-finger tan head that settled in due order and very good lacing Very mild aroma if roasted malt, caramel, coffee and chocolate with an even fainter musty tinge. Taste is a more pronounced dark, roasted malt flavor with molasses and a bit of smoke as it warmed. Below medium body (but not too weak) with light carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Darker brown color, thin tan head. Some smaller bubbles on side of glass. Some lace. Moderate carbonation, but nice big body. Nice chocolatey malt aroma, but still light enough to be drinkable. Nice bitter sweet taste. Good balance.
