3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a medium, off-white head.
Aroma: Sweetened coffee with dried dark fruits and anise. Roasty malts with subltle peat notes.
Taste: Dark, roasted maltiness with some lesser toasted qualities and a crystal malt sweetness. Hint of dark fruitiness. Pleasant smoked maltiness with a distinct touch of peat. Mild hop character with the bulk of the relatively low bitterness coming through from the roasted barley. Roasty, sweet and sour finish.
Palate: Medium-bodied. Low, easy-going carbonation.
Overall: Scotch porters are not my favorite style, but this was very nice. Not overly sweet. Balanced and drinkable. The scotch ale qualities balance the porter nicely.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz. bottle from BevMo. Nose of roasted malt with some chocolate and char. Taste of milk chocolate upfront, followed by a light coffee bitterness giving way to moderate peat smoke on the back-end. Hint of caramel and bread in the aftertaste. Excellent flavor and balance. Goes down very easy. A great example of a classic English porter.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Dark roast malt nose, pleasant coffee notes. Dark translucent brown, tan head. Roast malt, mild coffee, light bittering, chocolate from mid palate, dry finish. Thin-medium body, very smooth. Not sure what exactly makes this a "Scotch" brew. Tasty, though.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep brown with thin beige head. Earthy aromas, backed up by a sweet milk chocolate and a touch of the promised peat malt for the twist. Lingering subtle bitterness balances this finely tuned machine.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
355 ml bottle
Dark brown with hints of ruby. Light tan head that falls to a thin film.
Nose is peat, raisin, coco, grain, and toffee. Smokey and sweet.
Taste is smokey and sweet. Dark fruit, coco, roast, and earthy. Touch too thin but does not hurt it. Good lingering bitterness. Was pretty skeptical on this but am quite impressed. Good balance to this.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
June 20th, 2013 - The context for this deliciously flavored beer is lost to time. One clue is that I didn’t list it as a "Scotch Porter", but merely a porter. Perhaps this suggests it was a poorly labeled item on a menu, and so I picked it out while out and about. That’s easy to do when someone pastes "Scotch" across the front. That’s a style that has had me hooked since my Laughing Lab days in Colorado Springs. Does Mad River’s version hold up? The aroma is on par, with a slight oiliness, a bit of toasted malt, though not too much that is discernibly sweet. But the flavor practically explodes. Where were these tastes on the nose? Light raisin, a slight smoked touch, and a brutish, fig with plans to conquer to world. There’s a lot packed into this pint, and the nose clues me in on little to none of it.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
bottle from beer of the month club
Pours deep brown almost black-seem a bit thin looking-very small kacki head around rim of glass that was gone very quickly. Nose is char, chocolate, liter burnt notes and some baking chocolate. Flavors are very sweet actually-lots of chocolate, lite burnt coffee notes, and some toasted grains. body is a tad thin but acceptable. long burnt and sweet finish, sort of sweet and burnt, sort of baking chocolate sort of way. Not bad but not a top porter in my book.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
Beer of month club. Pours a dark brown with attractive 2 finger tan head. A subtle nose of roasted malts - not much. Very soft/smooth for a porter - some cocoa, roasted malts, licorice, with minimal hop and bitterness. Makes it a very easy, almost light, beer to drink.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Coffee black pour, with a nice, tan head. Sweet, malty aromas with cocoa thrown in. Flavor is straightforward with the roasted malts and chocolate. Solid porter that doesn’t have too much going on because it doesn’t need to.
