3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Pawola22 (2209) - Chicago, USA - SEP 3, 2011
22oz bottle from John’s Grocery in Iowa City, IA. Pours a black body with a thin, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is really nice with lots of fresh coffee and milky sweet chocolates. A touch of earthy peat and grain with a light roast. Flavor is similar. Lots of fresh coffee up front with plenty of milky chocolates to balance. A nice roast alongside the coffee with a light earth as well. Finishes dry with lots of coffee, roasts, and chocolate that leaves a medium, roasty and earthy bitterness. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-thin body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a really nice coffee stout. Lots of fresh coffee and a solid sweetness from the milky chocolates to balance very nicely. Extremely easy drinking and a nice roasty earth giving this a solid bitterness. I really liked this one.

Dark brown with a light brown head. Good coffee aroma, plus coffee and roasty flavor with some chocolate in the taste. Coffee flavor is about right as well, not overwhelming. Nice coffee stout.

Bottle at Dans. Poured deep brown with a small khaki head and good lacing. Smells of coffee, chocolate, light molasses, and dark fruit. Taste is chocolate, coffee, some tobacco, and light char. Mouthfeel is thick with soft carbonation. Overall, not bad and nothing off-putting, but nothing special.

Thanks to Aaron for the pour - headless, looks like cola - smells like vodka, coffee and tootsie rolls - taste is a bit better - bitter dark malts and moderate coffee - a bit of ashy character - alcohol in the finish, as well as some moderate chocolate - surprising alcohol burn for the abv.

Bottle @ Dan’s house. Deep brown/black appearance with a small, light brown head. Roasty, dark chocolate, coffee, light vanilla, a bit charred aroma. A little light bodied, roasty, charred malty, dark chocolate, espresso flavor. Pretty roasty flavor. Not bad.

$4.99 for a 22 oz. bottle at HyVee, Newton, IA. Pours deep brown with a fizzy but short-lived brown head. Smell of light coffee and stout roast malts, a little bit of warm alcohol. Taste is a somewhat light dry stout, with a slightly bitter coffee finish. Basic fizzy beer carbonation, but this works well with it. Slight note of staled stout behind it. Coffee is present, basically rounds out the palate rather than overruning it. And thus the odd desire to keep a coffee stout in the portfolio expands, from every brewer in the Quad Cities out to Newton. All using local coffee roasters, too. How does this happen? Enquiring minds may find out one day.

Thanks, CanIHave4Beers! Tasted from a bomber bottle into a tulip glass. Poured an opaque, black as black color with huge, moussy tan foam and exquisite Belgian lace. A perfect appearance. Judging by all that protein, they must’ve included plenty of unmalted oats or roasted barley. True-to-style coffee stout aromas and flavors. Fresher and darker-roasted coffee than typical, with a lighter, more digestive body than some. Extremely dry, toasty finish. Drinkable and delicious.

Smells like coffee, but tastes rather burnt. Thin head. Pours thick and oily. Doesnt sit on palate. Dry.
