CanIHave4Beers' rating

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 15/20
CanIHave4Beers (4027) - Pouring Bus, Iowa, USA - JAN 29, 2013
Pours a bright orange color with a small but well retained head and some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is malty & semisweet with some light fruit, some toastiness and a touch of mineral.

The flavor is nicely fruity and not really as sweet as what I normally associate with a Maibock, still it is mildly sweet and it has that sort of Malt Likka/Maibock alcohol flavor that seems to be a marking of the style. The hoppiness is light but snappy and satisfying... lightly herbal. The malt is a little toasty... I have to say that this rides the line somewhere between a Marzen and a Maibock.

This "Venture Series" stuff claims to be single batch, which makes my bottle of this perhaps older than a hop forward Maibock maybe ought to be served. That said itís still very good, enjoyable, and well made... It doesnít show much in the way of age or degradation. Either way, I sure wouldnít mind if they revisit this recipe or something like it. Madhouse had kind of a rocky start but they certainly have some nice tricks up their sleeve and I look forward to what is to come from them.

So-so. Orange pour. Some citrus flavor and grass. Lots of malt. A little too sweet, followed by an unpleasant cardboard finish. Not so much for me.

Bottle @ home via trade with randomgarbage. Thanks @ndy! Pours a bit hazy dark orange appearance with a small cream colored head. Spicy, herbal, potpourri floral hoppy, light citrusy, cracker aroma. A bit minty, herbal/floral hoppy, slightly toasted malty, a bit woody flavor. Overall, this bottle may be a bit old but itís seemed to have held up fairly well and is still enjoyable.

Bomber. A hazy bright copper body with a thin off white head. The nose has some grapefruit and potatoes. There is also a little bit of almonds. This tastes very sweet, like sugar coated orange slices. Lots of wood in the aftertaste along with sweet hay. I know Maibocks are usually sweet, but this is a little much. Almost like drinking a lemon lime Slice with some hops thrown in. Not my thing, but it is drinkable.

Aroma is pale malts and citrus hops. The flavor is citrus, malts, a hint of spices and honey and a dry and mildly bitter finish.

22 oz. bottle shared by dbsdelight- thanks, Dan! Second rating for this beer- where are you, CanIHave4Beers? Pepsiedcan? Anyway, this one pours a clear orange-gold with a tiny eggshell ring for a head. Aroma of sweet, toasty malts, crackers, straw, sugar, and grassy, citrusy hops. The flavor has a little soap up front, that quickly turns to citrus, toast, crackers, grass, straw, and sugar. Light-medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a malty mouthfeel. Interesting take on the style.

The saphir hops give a nice citrus note to this Maibock and the malts combine and the finish is sort of nutty and interesting. Unlike most Maibocks, which are a bit too watery for my liking, this one has lots of flavor going on while still being a light, may beer. It may not be as "to style" as some, but to me thatís good. Iíd rather have a beer taste good than have it fit every rote style guideline the BJCP puts out.
