Specialty malts bring intimations of brown sugar and vanilla, which meld into the Gnarly’s character. Roasted coffee malt flavors and residual sweetness dance in harmony, obscuring the line between brown ale and porter.

Draft. Poured a clear dark brown color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate toasted dark chocolate malt aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex brown that exceeded my expectations.

Sample at The Ohio Taproom. Pours a clear brownish-amber color with a medium tan head that recedes gradually. Strings of lacing on the glass. Roasted malt, coffee and hops in the nose. Medium-bodied with flavors of roasty coffee, chocolate malt and mild hops. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

On tap at Cincinnati Winter Beer Fest (CWBF) 2013. Clear dark brown color. Minimal khaki head. Little loose lace. Surprisingly hoppy. Little earthy hop, some herbal. Toasty malt. Little chocolate malt. Predominantly bitter taste. Medium body, light crisp carbonation, dry texture. More smooth. Like it. Solid, though unusually hoppy brew

Pull from my wife’s draft at the brewery. Pours a clear, rich, brownish amber color with a finger of off-white head. Nice toast and caramel on the aroma with some lighter dry chocolate and a bit of balancing earthy hops. Flavor has really big, long toasted malt notes, caramel, chocolate, earth, and arguably a bit of mild coffee. Light-medium bodied, with a long, lingering toasty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Really nice brown ale. Best beer of the day.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2016 12 oz can (also on draft). Pours a clear cola brown with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have a nice blend of roasted malt, chocolate and some coffee notes. The body is better than most browns as is the flavor. Almost drinks like a porter. Solid brown with a twist.

Can. Pours brown with a beige head. Mild roasted and nutty malts, some sweetness, some bready notes, low bitterness, and a rich malty finish. Pretty good.
