A Beer Cloaked in Secrecy An ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it answers. A beer brewed clandestinely and given a name whose meaning is never revealed. Why #9? Why, indeed. A sort of dry, crisp, fruity, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really impossible to describe because there’s never been anything else quite like it. Fermented with our 150 year old strain of top-fermenting English yeast.

On tap. Pours a clear copper with no head. Light aromas of fruity malts. Flavors of a malt liquor. Not impressed. Slightly above an industrial brew.

Poured into a pint glass from a 12oz bottle. Orange-gold color, slight lacy head. Taste is straw, lemon, a bit of bitterness. Surprisingly heavy mouthfeel, and my West Coast tastes definitely rebel a bit against this one. Nothing too special, but it isn’t too bad.

Nose had hints of berry fruit that were pleasant. Thought the mouth would prove something reminiscent but was very perfumed and fruited. Unbalanced. Palatable but not intriguing ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rating #963 - February 10, 2014. $12.99 CAD for 6 341ml bottles at Coop (sale price). Did not know this was a fruit beer until opening, expectation of an APA may have resulted in lower than justifiable rating. But then again, I really don’t have to justify myself to you, internet. Pours a golden yellow with a bubbly white head. Aroma is sweetened apricot jelly, pale malt. Palate is more of the sugary apricot with some mild grassy, earthy hops. One of the worst apricot beers I’ve tried, way behind Alley Kat, Pyramid, St. Ambroise. Not impressive.

Bottle. Pours golden amber with small, quickly dissipating head. Lightly carbonated. Caramel, cereal, banana aroma. Taste is caramel and fruit, then lightly hop bitter, slightly sour then apricot, and finally spicy. Not bad, just not great.

Clear golden color, white head. Malty, sweet, berry taste. Berry, sweet aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, low bitterness. Sweet, berry scent.

Odd duck. Pours a dark gold or super light amber with a foamy white head of tightly packed bubbles. Aroma leans towards malt: caramel, bread, hay, cereal, nuts, roasty, hops are very hard to detect, earthy, dough, some basement aromas, cooked vegetables, it’s a really, really, really, interesting aroma. Initially the taste is very balanced. As the beer opens up it leans towards sour/bitter. Palate is quirky but enjoyable. It’s a strange brew but I like it.

The renowned Magic Hat #9. For all the hype, i can't say I really thought this beer was that enjoyable, although it was distinctive. Pale amber color, fruity aroma. Taste was mild hoppiness with unusual fruit flavors; apricot seems to be the consensus as to the identification of this brew's distinctive taste. I did not enjoy the fruitiness although the hoppy notes were pleasant. Texture maybe better than average smoothness. Hmm... OK overall. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

I was surprised by how good this beer was. The bottle says its a "not quite pale ale." It should say "yummy fruit beer." Totally enjoyed it and I’ll buy it again I get the chance.
