pjk33 (383), Sligo - Curllsville Heights, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 12, 2007 Bottle. This one was the 2007 summer mystery beer in the Magic Hat sampler that Nate Vanderpool brought me on Belmont day... This brew pours an amber color and looks like an ESB. This is not much like any 2IPA that I’ve had. It is a tasty beer, but more like an English style IPA with more alcohol. Most U.S. IIPA’s have lots of cascade and a lot more malt flavor. This is good, but just a little different. Mouthfeel is a bit creamy and is nice. I like this one, but I’m not sure why, as I’m not a fan of English IPA’s. Hops are strong and bitter, but it’s a nice brew.
DocLock (4102), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 4, 2008 Thanks to obeygiant for this one. Pours deep copeery with ruby edges and off-white head. Nose is caramel malt, hops, vinous fruit. Tastes very hoppy in a piney sticky sense, with some caramel maltm, vinous fruit, and a smooth albeit slightly watery mouthfeel. Not bad, but I wish i could have had this one fresh. phishpond417 (1418), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jun 8, 2008 Magic Hat never dissapoints me. This brew is a gift from Singlemalter: Pours a reddish brown colour with a very distinct sweet malted aroma. And followed up by a caramel finish. I thought it wasn’t that hoppy for an IPA, but delicious none the less! Slipstream (357), USA Nov 30, 2007 The label is nothing great, but the beer looks okay. There is a small head that laces the glass, and a rich, sweet, fruity flavor. This was called the Summer Mystery Beer, and it is a full-bodied, strong-flavored ale. The taste is roasted grains, malt, and a little lemon and grapefruit. The hops are robust, especially in the finish. There was just a hint of skunk - the bottle might have been past its freshness date. This reminded me of some of the Lagunitas ales I have tried. It also made me wonder about the differences between IIPAs and APAs, since this seemed like it could be either. This is one of The Hat’s more powerful and interesting creations - I plan to try as many of their beers as I can find. xmarcnolanx (655), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Nov 6, 2007 For a DIPA this has a really tiny aroma. Taste is mostly soapy and thin. Very average..... meh. Hawksfan17 (612), Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 20, 2007 Had it under the name The Summer Mystery Beer. Pours a hazy amber. Smells of malt with notes of sweet chocolate. Taste hoppy, earthy, maybe peat. It is a very good beer to drink on a saturday afternoon.
