Bottle. Pours brown with a decent sized tan head. Aroma of smoke and barbeque sauce. flavor is of barbeque sauce, interesting flavor, but just an average beer.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 axilla (962) - New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 8, 2005
I found a bunch of old singles at a local bottle shop. I was really surprised at the way this one held up. Most Magic Hats aren’t great aging beers. The aroma was very malty with a little smoke. Flavors are mostly toasted malts with a little smoke and a subtle hop finish. No where near the smokiness of Jinx. A little better balanced, though.
3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 CamdenD (825) - Madrid, SPAIN - JUL 13, 2004
NIce beer, was available in mixer packs a few years ago, don’t know about now. Interesting beer, believe it was made to be a scotch ale of sorts. Wonderful smell of malts and a bit of hops (notice the specificity of my descriptions!). The taste let me down a bit -- just dull that’s all. Anyway, good effort at a scotch ale -- wish more brewers took a swipe at this style.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 PeterA (340) - SLOVAK REPUBLIC - OCT 15, 2003
I couldn't decide what the aroma was like, and then I decided it smelled like a sweetened humidor. I enjoyed the mocha taste. I was surprised by the feel of the carbonation. The dark brown color was impressive.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 superman (13) - USA - JUL 22, 2003
Nice, relaxed dark beer with a smoked taste. Powerful, but not too strong-- another healthy addition to the MH family. Too bad it's only seasonal. Slightly less powerful than the Heart of Darkness.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 jskendzel (602) - Washington DC, USA - APR 3, 2003
Nice thick dark tan head with a deep brown ruby color. Nose is malty, little if any smoke. First sip is more bitter than smokey. Lightly tangy/sour and seems endowed with carbonation. Needs more smoke in my humble opinion.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 AustinMilbarge (681) - Denver, Colorado, USA - FEB 11, 2003
Slightly off-white, tight-packed head. Slowly diminishing. Ruby highlights the dark coffee bean color. Slight carbonation. The aroma is smokey (imagine that) with accents of something sweet, almost like heather, I don't know though. Smokey flavor to be sure. Definitely there is a coffee bitterness, almost too much. Pretty good overall. The bottle art for this brewery is pretty good.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 argo0 (9264) - Washington DC, USA - DEC 25, 2002
Cola colored, slightly hazy, with minimal light tan head. Aroma is sweet (some caramel and hint of cocoa), coffee roasty, and noticeably smokey. Taste is mildly smokey, some malty caramel sweetness and coffee bitterness.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 VENOM (941) - Connecticut, USA - DEC 24, 2002
Clear auburn with a slight chill haze. Small, dense light beige head. Slow and scattered carbonation. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and charred wood. Initially mellow, lightly fizzy and tangy with a peat, Beachwood mix of smokiness. Slick and smooth. Medium light body. Delicate malt body and a mild buttery yeast overlay. Softly roasted malts and an earthy hop profile balance each other out. Goldings notes dominate as it warms. Toasty chocolate and a spicy alcohol flash round it out. Finishes with a touch of sticky caramel and a drier malt base. Smokiness fades to a hickory-esque afterglow. Quite a treat.
