Magic Hat Brewing Co. Elixirs Find... Brewery Tour Now Playing Shop Peep Show Get Social About Us Home Blog Circus Boy ó THE Hefeweizen Unfiltered and unfettered, Circus Boy is a unique and refreshing American-style Hefeweizen. Is he a who? Or a what? Or perhaps some of both? Be amazed by the flavorful haze of this wonderful wheat beer.

Editorís note: Yes, the bottle calls it a hefeweizen. The beer, however, is brewed with a (fairly hefty) portion of lemongrass, which contributes a significant aroma and flavor. Thus we have deemed it a Spice/herb/vegetable and not a German Hefeweizen, which should be free from adjuncts (other than hops).

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a hazy golden color. Itís actually pretty damn clear until the yeast is poured in - and even after, itís still not that cloudy. The head isnít anything to write home about, either. It isnít even a finger high, has an off-white color, and very poor retention. S: Smells like a generic wheat ale. The ester notes are very muted...and even worse, seem off somehow. Wheat malt is the most prevalent note I pick up, along with a twinge of candied sugar. T: Thereís lots of wheat to start, along with a slight spiciness. And then after that...nothing. The finish is empty in flavor. I guess it isnít bad, but thatís only because itís so devoid of character. M: Well, if I have to pick something I like about this one, then Iíll say I enjoy how soft it feels. Itís a pretty sweet brew, as well, lacking the vibrant carbonation of some examples. O: BOOO-RING. The simple fact that itís just really dull instantly makes it better than the abomination that was Seance, at least. In a way, I hate these boring beers simply because they create dull reviews...just like this one.

Felt like a hefe the other day and got this. My bad. I could handle a lemongrass spiced hefe, but this is just a shit beer. Looks filtered though itís not. Aroma and taste is the hefe yeast version of malty cardboard, and an additional off was that in no way shape or form can you tell is supposed to be lemongrass. Not getting finished.

12 Fl. Oz. bottle. Poured cloudy, amber, huge fizzy white head and sediment floating all around. Aroma of citrus fruit (lemon), grains, clove and some malts. Taste is consistent, crisp, lemongrass notes, spices and some grain notes. Overall an OK brew.

Super carbonated, lighter than a hefeweizen with interesting if expected grassy and lemony notes throughout, this is quite drinkable even if, as always, itís got an overhopped finish

355ml bottle. I feel like magic hat rates are rates for ratingís sake. Doesnít look remotely close to a hefeweizen. Smell is insanely light bread crust. Almost no scent. Flavor is wheaty, mineral water, plastic, some fruit notes. This is an abomination.

Drank from bottle 11/8. Slight floral aroma. Mild taste. Not to bad of a beer, could definitely down a few and not feel it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Transfer from BA review on 10-4-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance Ė The beer pours a hazed lightly tinted orange-amber color with a small one finger fizzy white head. The head fades quite quickly leaving a patchy film on the top of the brew and very little lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell Ė The aroma is super light overall with just a little bit of a wheaty smell and a small amount of yeast and grass. Taste Ė The taste begins wheaty and bready with a light hint of yeast. It has a moderate sweetness upfront with some flavors of lemonade. As the flavor advances the sweet begins fading with the lemonade turning a bit more sour, taking on a more tart lemon flavor. Flavors of a grassy nature come to the tongue at the end leaving a rather pleasant, semi sweet, wheaty taste on the tongue. Mouthfeel ĖThe body of the beer is very light with a carbonation level that is on the higher side. Both are rather nice for the somewhat sweeter hefe flavors of the brew and make it quite easy to drink. Overall Ė Not a flavor powerhouse, but rather easy drinking. A decent brew overall.

Like other magic hat brews, this beer did an excellent job of masking the "unusual" ingredient or flavoring...I really did not notice the lemongrass until I read up about the beer later on. The overall character of this beer is like a lighter, crisper version of a hefeweizen. It does have a slight lemony aroma, when I pay attention and look for it. Flavor is muted, and this beer is considerably more astringent, especially in the finish, than a typical hefeweizen. Overall, very interesting, and very pleasant. I think I slightly prefer the traditional hefeweizens, but this was really worth trying and was well-executed and different, yet subtle and balanced.

12 oz bottle poured into a Weizen glass. The initial aroma is a rather strong warm buttered toast aroma, more on the buttery sweet side than toast side. When that subsides not too long thereafter, a spicy lemongrass comes in to replace is with some banana and clove in the background. The beer is a slightly hazy, golden yellow with a fluffy white head that reduces slowly. It leaves behind an abundant, puffy lace with a good, puffy ring and some wisps on the surface. Itís a refreshing, light balance of sweet and bitter - maybe a bit more sweet than bitter. The beer is medium / medium-light in body with a creamy / oily texture and a light, prickly carbonation. It finishes dry and crisp, with kick of a spicy lemon zest and something resembling a coriander and/or clove mixture that disappears pretty quickly. The aftertaste is a light toasted grain, but it fades quickly.
