3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample at a tasting. It poured a dark red-brown liquid with a dark dirty white head. Dark malty smell with some smoke and roasted notes. Similar taste. This doesn’t resemble a Black IPA at all, more like a brown ale or similar. However it was nice and easy to drink, it should change it’s name/style though.

Aroma is dark malts and a hint of citrus and chocolate. The flavor is cocoa/chocolate, citrus, malts and a medium bitter finish.

If I were rating this beer strictly on style, I would give it a 0. Magic hat should have followed #9’s designation and called this a "not quite porter beer." This is definitely not an IPA. That being said its not a bad beer, any hops that are present are buried by the chocolaty, roasty dark malts on the front though. Some kind of hopness might be found on the back end but I just taste chocolate milk and roast. The body is the best, you absolutely cannot see through it, completely opaque black. Not a terrible brew but I’d definitely drink another IPA or porter/stout if I had other choices depending on what I was in the mood for.

Well its not a bad porter, lol. But they had better give a serious reconsideration of the hop rate on this beer before calling it a Black IPA. I don’t rate to style anyway so its not big deal, but just to a make a point: this is laughable as a Black IPA. Poured a dark brown, modest head. Initial nose was a blast of citric hops but these volatile compounds disappeared quickly and the second sniff was all chocolate milk with a touch of caramel. Flavor is very similar, with tons of chocolate, a hint of caramel sweetness, a hint of ashy roasty, and a quick bang of citric hop bitterness at the end. Strong carbonation also gives this a significant carbonic bite that detracts from the overall mouthfeel and experience of this beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Otto’s in Brown Deer. Pours opaque inky blacky with a tannish head leaving nice lacing. Aroma has thick roasted malts, soy, some earthiness and licorice. Taste is of sweet caramel, roasted malts, salty soy and some smoke. No real hoppiness that one would hope for from a black ipa. More like an interesting brown ale? Finishes smoky and malty.

2.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
Smells of toffee and dark chocolate. Pouts black with foamy brown head. Tastes of chocolate and coffee beans. Lacking the hoppiness of an ipa. More of a black lager

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This IPA poured a deep black colour with a big, light brown, creamy head. To the nose there are scents of cocoa, clight coffee, vanilla, caramel and light grass. First sip was very roasty on the palate with additional flavours of toast and coffee along with cocoa. Finish was deep roasted coffee flavour and the palate was burnt. Delicious!

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce single bottle from Total Wine in Huntersville, NC. Pours a nice black/brown color with a tan head. Aroma is malts and cocoa. Taste is roasted malt, cocoa and has no aftertaste. No signs of alcohol, drinks smooth. A good beer, it just seems like it is missing something.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 ounce bottle - $1.49 at Charlie’s Beer and Wine in Marietta, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a very dark brown body with a smallish, light beige head. Not too terribly much lacing on the descent.
Smell: Roasty, chary, slightly ashen malts with far fainter hints of bitter chocolate, licorice. Lightly leafy hops and some mild, understated citrus hints.
Taste: Coffee-flavored roastiness, a bit chary, with a small helping of dark, bitterish chocolate and oh-so burnt bread crusts. Hint of licorice coming through as it warms a minute or two. Light sweetness. Leafy, faintly citrus hops with sufficient bitterness. Drying, roasty finish with a low, lingering bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied (barely). Medium carbonation.
Overall: Not nearly as hoppy or as bitter as many Black IPA’s, but still firmly roasty. A situation I’ll face with a brave smile. Even still, it’s OK. Just OK.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Not really what I’d expect from something in the IPA family. Not very hoppy at all. Really cool look, very dark almost looking like a porter. Easy drink, but not terribly flavorful.
