3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
The beer pours a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma has a nice blueberry and elderberry character, as well as some wheat. The beer smells fairly juicy overall. The flavor has some tart berry notes, as well as some wheat. The fruit seems a bit artificial and is very sweet. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Better than I expected, but nothing to seek out.

Enjoyed straight from the bottle on a warm afternoon standing in front of a grill with a buddy. Great summer flavor.

Bottle at Peel. This had a bit of red in it and was served too cold. Berries are tasted and they are soft. It is on the sweet side. Malts and a bit of wheat are noted. Not to be considered a great beer and considering some of their offerings this was okay.

Bottle. A meh base wheat beer with artificial berry flavors. Thankfully it wasnt as cloying and awful as leineís berry weiss, but blah nonetheless

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
A subtle fruit beer, thankfully. This is a particularly good thing considering the elderberry flavor isnít the best. Itís a bit syrupy. The palate is a bit off as a result.

"Your mother was a hampster & your father smelled of elderberries!" Couldnít resist... This beer does have a subtle berry aroma. Poured a coppery honey color with a lean white head. Light-bodied with a smooth, fresh finish. Mild hoppiness with a dry finish.

dear god, is it possible that they finally made a Magic Hat product that i dont hate or feel "meh" about? i didnt think it was possible, but this is actually a pretty decent wheat. its closer to a hefe in that its quite cloudy and has more body than most of the watery american wheat ales out there. i guess there is a bit if a berry note in there, sort of hard to tell. thats ok though. i hope this one is around for a while, i could actually see drinking this again. well done, Magic Hat-you didnt screw things up again!

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Aroma: Wheaty, yeasty, berries, sweet. Appearance: Golden, cloudy, with a frothy, off-white head. Taste: Sweet, melon and darker berry flavors, soft bitterness, slight sourness. Palate: Light body, thin texture, lively carbonation, abrupt finish with slight dryness. A good, easy going summer beer with no pretensions.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dark hazy copper. Thin head. Smells like berries, tastes like what I imagine an elder berry tastes like. Tart and slightly sour. Coronation creates nice balance.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
I poured a 12oz bottle into a wheat beer glass.
Appearance: Hazy dark orange color but plenty of visible carbonation. Initially forms a large, white, soapy head, but it evaporates very quickly and leaves no lacing on the glass.
Smell: Odd, slightly sour scent of very generic fruit flavoring and generic wheat beer.
Taste: I donít know what elder berries are or what they taste like, but I shouldnít have to in order to appreciate Magic Hat Elder Betty. Iíve had many fruit wheat beers before and while most of them are average at best, this one is one of the worst examples. It begins rather sweet with a generic fruit cereal-like taste up front. While I wouldnít say it tastes like blueberries outright, thatís the closest taste I can compare it to. Thereís a standard "American pale wheat ale" taste throughout the palate of very mild wheat as well.
As it transitions to the finish thereís an odd, tart, sour or tannic flavor that pops up quickly. Itís short-lived but itís quite disruptive. Perhaps this is an off-flavor from the bottle being "too old" but that shouldnít be the case since this is a summer seasonal and Iím drinking smack dab in the middle of summer in early July. If it was brewed and bottled in the winter and sat on store shelves at room temperature for months - well, thatís not my problem! Whatever the case may be this is a boring beer at the core that is made off-putting by the sour and tannic flavors.
Drinkability: I drank this outside on a hot day and even at fridge temperature, Magic Hat Elder Betty wasnít exactly refreshing. Sure the palate is clean, the mouthfeel is soft and it goes down smoothly, but "refreshed" is not how I felt afterwards. It does eventually leave a slightly pasty aftertaste which only adds to the annoyance of the palate. Itís hard to believe itís 5.5% ABV when the body and weight feels like something much lighter. Itís just a lot of gratuitous calories.
