3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Nice drinkable stout. Not too heavy, nice carbonation, nice balance with coffee and smoky notes with a lower ABV. Good change of pace stout from heavier varieties.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle pours a dark brown/black with a small khaki head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, slight coffee, and slight roast, smells pretty sweet. Nice earthy bitterness, bittersweet chocolate, nice roast, vanilla, finishing with some mild bitter hops. Well rounded and very decent.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
I poured a 12oz bottle into a nonic pint glass. It was bottled on 10/30/13 and cost $2.50 ($0.21 per ounce).
Appearance: Opaque black body, no carbonation visible. Pours to a fairly large, dark tan, frothy head which laces and retains very well.
Smell: Light notes of roasted malt, some dairy-like scent, well water.
Taste: Magic Hat Heart of Darkness is what I would consider a generic, average stout in pretty much all aspects. Itís not bad, but itís definitely lacking in appeal. The palette is simple and mild, but the taste is decent. Though I do find its mildness to be difficult to overlook. The first half of the swig is slightly sweet, with a watered-down cola taste to it. Only a little bit of bitterness on the second half with some roasted malt thatís prominent at first, but fades away quickly. It has a taste reminiscent of certain British brews made from hard well water, but without any other British character (it is fermented with English ale yeast). A hint of nuttiness right as it finishes, which is nice. Overall, a fine stout, but so much more couldíve been done.
Drinkability: While this isnít the most robust stout in the world, at least itís no challenge to drink. The mouthfeel to Magic Hat Heart of Darkness is light, with a wet, watery sensation and no carbonation crispness. This enables a smooth finish and high quaffability. It drinks and feels like a lighter beer than its 5.7% ABV. Too heavy and uninteresting to session, though.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a very dark brown with a khaki colored head, smells of chocolate, malts and just a bit of hops. Taste is very smooth dark chocolate, some malts and then enough hops to balance it out. This beer is very thin, it takes away from the rest of beer a lot.
