COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Born of dark and cold and snow in the marrow of the northeast’s longest night, HOWL comes in on wailing winds with winter-weary eyes burning holes in sunless shadows. In its darkened depths out inner voids are warmed. 12.0° Plato

black as night, just like it boasts. With the creepy eyes of Bela Lugosi’s Dracula on the label. Roasted malt and licorice dominate the aroma. A creamy smoothness starts the flavor, but it’s quickly cut with a reasonable amount of hops and a dry finish. The roasted malt and anise flavors continue with the addition of wood and grapes. It’s not a big and bashing beer, but it’s got plenty of flavor. Pretty nice schwarzbier (dark lager) here. Complex and balanced flavors, smooth to drink, and at only 4.6% ABV, it’s nice to have a few on a long winter’s night. The best thing I’ve had from Magic Hat.

12oz, mix pack again. Pours out a black hue, decent head. Aromas are pretty basic, not sure how this is a schwarz, i’m really not getting any smoke. Smooth entry, but the mid palate is boring again, some cocoa, and it’s smooth, but very light. Finish is light and malty. Really basic, I can see how it is appealing to some, but too light for a winter seasonal.

Bottle. The pour was a dark brown with a mahogany hue and an average sized (1-2 finger) creamy light beige head that was mostly diminishing and had decent streaky lacing. The aroma was of s roasted bread malt and a dark doughy yeast with notes of milk chocolate, coffee and mild scent of milk. The taste was very lightly sweet and malty with a touch of milk chocolate at first and then became mildly bitter with a decent dose of coffee and cream at the end. The flavor lasted a little longer than average with a mild bitter coffee ending. Mouthfeel was right between light and medium in body with a slightly oily texture and a soft carbonation. Overall a decent light bodied dark brew with a nice milky feel to.

The aroma is toast and coffee. The appearance is opaque black with a two finger tan head. The body is medium plus and smooth with onlya mildly perceptable hoppiness. Good.

Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is of chocolate, slight coffee, roasted malts, and some caramel malts. Flavor is the same. A little more of the roasted malts then I thought. Slightly watery on the finish.

Thin, browned silken head stretched over a black body. A cool syrupy coal-smoke nose. Black patent makes an impression. The body also resonates with black patent. A certain dry ash character amidst the wetness. More roasty than one would expect of a schwarzbier, and much more reflective of a porter.

Howl is dark brown and oily with some suspension. It has a straightforward roasted aroma. The taste is bittersweet throughout, with hints of chocolate and coffee. It bites the palate in spite of, or perhaps because of, having a light body. Thinner and more bitter than most schwarz.
