Clear mahogany with a thinning head and some lacing. Roasted malts, slight molasses and some burnt brown sugar. Taste is somewhat thin with roasted malts, molasses and hoppier than expected. Thin, dry and carbonated. Strong bittersweet finish.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Backlog rating on 8-27-2012. This beer has a medium sized beige head that mostly diminishes, reddish brown transparent body, and very fast rising carbonation. The aroma is malt and chocolate. The flavor is roasted malt and sweet. The mouthfeel is smooth, watery and thin. This beer is light bodied. Overall, this beer is easy to drink due to its watery texture. There is not enough going on with this beer for me to want it again.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
UPDATED: NOV 12, 2014 Bottle: Deep brown, edging towards black in the center but never really getting there. SCHWARZbier? Come on. Lighter brown edges with a khaki colored, thin layered froth on top. Aroma has a nice bit of roasted & nearly charred malt with a strong backing of dry coffee beans, perhaps just a kiss of unsweet cacao, too. Mild earthiness. Taste is dry, full of more roasted malt, dry coffee grounds, & some light char. Back-end balances with a hint of sweetness from the malt, almost with a mild dark chocolate essence to it. Very mild hint of burnt caramel & molasses. A touch of earthy spice from the hops, I’m assuming. All in all, one of the better Magic Hat beers I’ve had. Decent.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Reviewed from notes.
The appearance had a dark mahogany colored body with a tiny white head that dies fairly quickly.
The smell had coffee, and really kinda overbearing
The taste had the coffee come back with light hops, almost barely noticeable.
The palate was about a medium/heavy, not that sessionable at all, thick coffee aftertaste and finish.
Overall, this is decent for the style, however this is a "meal" beer, too heavy for me and with the low ABV, I was confused why it felt as heavy as it did.

One of the better magic hat beers and a decent schwarzbier. Lots of roasted character, surprisingly light and chocolatey.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
FROM NOTES: July 10, ’12
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.
A: Coffee hit me as I was still pouring this one. Roasted coffee and chocolate notes fill the glass. Good strong smell.
A: Black, but not opaque, with some brown and red showing through in the light. Big sticky tan head crowns the beer and doesn’t budge much.
T: Nice roasty charachter, lots of flavor for such a low ABV beer. Notes of cocoa and roasted malts, with a nice note of dry bitter hops and a hint of grapefruit on the back end.
P: A little thin, carbonation is spot on.
O: A surprisingly enjoyable beer. Magic Hat will come up and surprise you every-so-often. Not a bad beer. Drinkable but nothing over complex about it. It’s just simple. A nice change from the bigger, heavier complex beers.

Winter 2010 Vintage
7/20/2010: Magic Hat Howl Black-as-Night Winter Lager... Aroma: Roasted barley, black patent malt, and medium-roast coffee beans; a hint of chocolate as well. Appearance: Not black in color, but more like a deep, rich brown color; mostly opaque; rushing carbonation; thick, dense tan-colored head that seems to hang around for a good while; nice lacing. Flavor: Smooth, roasted maltiness; a bit of char; dry and dusty (cocoa) finish with some coffee-like bitterness; slightly over-attenuated. Palate: Medium-full in body; extremely smooth and creamy; airy. Overall: Decent black lager; not bad at all!
