Out of a bottle. Aromas and flavors of full roasted malt. Nice crispness and medium mouthfeel for a lager. Nice clear black.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Pailhead (3326) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - FEB 2, 2012
Bottle: The aroma consists of cocoa, caramel, and roasted nuts. It pours a dark brown but when held to the light there is some orange tinted transparency. It has a one finger beige head that quickly fades to a thick film that leaves behind some spotted lacing. The flavor starts with chocolate and light caramel. The finish has notes of roasted nuts and light cereal/grain. It’s light-medium bodied with somewhat lively carbonation that is a bit prickly at times. Overall, I’m generally disappointed with Magic Hat offerings, but this isn’t bad. If my options where limited, I could possibly see buying this again.

Black, tall pillowy head...kind of a vague rootbeer scent at first, taste is coffee, chocolate, cocoa. very mild, drinks very smoothly with consistent flavour start to finish. a very comfortable beer.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 mcnealc31 (155) - Elida, Ohio, USA - JAN 24, 2012
black as night, just like it boasts. With the creepy eyes of Bela Lugosi’s Dracula on the label. Roasted malt and licorice dominate the aroma. A creamy smoothness starts the flavor, but it’s quickly cut with a reasonable amount of hops and a dry finish. The roasted malt and anise flavors continue with the addition of wood and grapes. It’s not a big and bashing beer, but it’s got plenty of flavor.
Pretty nice schwarzbier (dark lager) here. Complex and balanced flavors, smooth to drink, and at only 4.6% ABV, it’s nice to have a few on a long winter’s night. The best thing I’ve had from Magic Hat.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 cakanator (440) - South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 22, 2012
12oz, mix pack again. Pours out a black hue, decent head. Aromas are pretty basic, not sure how this is a schwarz, i’m really not getting any smoke. Smooth entry, but the mid palate is boring again, some cocoa, and it’s smooth, but very light. Finish is light and malty. Really basic, I can see how it is appealing to some, but too light for a winter seasonal.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 KajII (344) - Macon, North Carolina, USA - JAN 22, 2012
Bottle. The pour was a dark brown with a mahogany hue and an average sized (1-2 finger) creamy light beige head that was mostly diminishing and had decent streaky lacing.
The aroma was of s roasted bread malt and a dark doughy yeast with notes of milk chocolate, coffee and mild scent of milk.
The taste was very lightly sweet and malty with a touch of milk chocolate at first and then became mildly bitter with a decent dose of coffee and cream at the end. The flavor lasted a little longer than average with a mild bitter coffee ending.
Mouthfeel was right between light and medium in body with a slightly oily texture and a soft carbonation.
Overall a decent light bodied dark brew with a nice milky feel to.
