COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
High in the hills of mountains white with winter, in the settled snow, there is a sudden shift. As bitter winds begin to blow, the packed Graupel moves mysteriously and creates a cascading avalanche of sound and change. Revealed are stalks of wheat harvested for a warming Wheat Wine. Apollo and Simcoe hops help to create a big-bodied beer Ė malty up front with a nice hop bite in back Ė and a 10.8% ABV that will thaw the coldest of souls. Behold Graupel, born of avalanche, brewed of wheat and imbibed below the swirling stars of the universe at large.

Been away for a few weeks, always give my liver a break at the beginning of the year. First rate of 2013, must preface this by saying I am not a fan of Magic Hat but this was gifted to me and I am intrigued, even though I was completely underwhelmed by Burnpile rendering from the Humdinger series. Corked & caged 750 to CBS snifter. Lots of pillowy yellow/white head with cloudy orange liquid. Lots of sticky white lacing hanging around, mellow nose just a bit of spice methinks. Itís a little hot right out of the gate, mid-palate is really nice lot of flavor; cardamom, mesquite honey, burnt banana. Finish is more heat and something astringent. Almost kills it for me. Mouthfeel is all over the place; full to start, medium in the middle, again really big astringent finish. Overall, this was better than expected and might be even better in a few years, still havenít been won over by this brewery.

Light brown and bubbly head; Smooth, with malt liquor characteristics. Balanced, although a tad of sour in finish.

From a bottle poured a brown color with a small amount of head. Spicy malty flavor with a quick finish.

Overly sweet and lacks a full carbonation. Appearance is a cloudy copper gold with minimal lacing and a quick to dissipate head. Hints if caramel, plums, raisins. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma: Lots of yeast aromas--cheese and wet leaves, with hints of bread. Appearance: Clear bright orange with a rich tan head. Taste: Light sweetness with a medium sourness to balance. Palate: Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation, long finish. Overall: Alcohol is a bit overpowering, and the complex layers that ought to be there are lost. Itís not a bad beer, but a bit one-dimensional.

Kind of a miss here. Heavy on the barley finish with some bitterness, some booze. Candied finish, a lot of booze. Too much sweetness. A lot of different aromas floating around, they just donít necessarily come together super well. Pours orangy brown with good head and lacing. Bottle.

750 mL bottle. Hazy brown with a small, light brown head. The aroma is mild, but it does have the typical sweet honey and booze scent of a barleywine. The flavour is good, without being particularly interesting. Unlike, say, the Smuttynose Wheat Wine, Iím not sure Iíd have known there was wheat in here, if I hadnít seen it on the label.

Bottle. Pours copper orange with a thin white head. Aroma of wheat, light caramel and a hint of honey. Flavor of sweet malts, caramel, candi sugar, toffee, subtle honey and some fruitiness.

750 ml bottle into snifter, late 2012 bottling. Pours slightly hazy pale orange amber color with a small dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big orange zest, lemon zest, pineapple, peach, pear, apple, honey, wheat, light caramel, floral, grass, toast, pepper, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness; with a light phenolic note. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop, malt, and ester notes; with good strength. Taste of orange zest, lemon zest, peach, pear, apple, pineapple, honey, wheat, pepper, floral, grass, light caramel, toast, clove, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus zest, peach, pear, pineapple, apple, honey, wheat, floral, grass, pepper, toast, clove, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Good balance and complexity of hop, malt, and ester notes; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a slick and fairly crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a nice wheatwine style. Good balance of hop, malt, and ester flavors; and quite smooth to sip on for the gravity. A nicely enjoyable offering.

MartinT (7760) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 14, 2013
My Bottom Line:
Wheat, mild caramel and hop resins meet midway in this alcohol-smeared Wheat Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam covers the shiny amber.
-This is leaner than I had expected (which is a good thing).
-The flavor profile is rather polished even though it isnít very complex.
-Carbonation is quite high, which nicely offsets the potency of the experience.

Bottle.

Hoppy for a barley wine. Golden little head medium body not much else to say try it for yourself and see if you can give it a better rating
