3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Taco Mac. Dark caramel pour with a tan head that dissipates to a thin cap; some spotty lacing. Aroma is yeasty, figgy, and brown sugar. Taste follows the nose, lots of raisin coming through. Very sweet. Medium-full body; sticky sweet. Right amount of fizz. Some alcohol warmth present. This is very much a sippiní beer as it is very sweet.

[5308-20130429] Tap. Figgy date aroma. Slightly hazy, amber orange body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Super sweet boozy fig-infused toasted caramel malt grain flavour. Medium-full body. Interesting, overly sweet. (7/3/6/3-/12) 3.1

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, prune, pear, fig, date, caramel, toast, molasses, toffee, dark candi sugar, brown bread, clove, banana, chocolate, biscuit, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of dark malt, fruit, and yeast ester notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, prune, pear, fig, date, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, brown bread, dark candi sugar, chocolate, clove, banana, biscuit, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, dark candi sugar, brown bread, chocolate, clove, banana, biscuit, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of dark malt, fruit, and yeast ester flavors; with big robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Belgian strong dark ale! All around awesome complexity, balance, and robustness of dark malt, fruit, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, caged & corked. Big, dark pour. Only a thin head. Rich with dark fruit, dates and prunes, but also quite drinkable, not over the top in any regard, and cleanly done. Smooth. Hides the 8% quite well. Decent. (#5313, 11/5/2013)

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Picked this up in NYC recently for 2 bucks, so how could I resist? Pours with a fairly dark garnet-brown pour and a thin fast-fading head. The nose is pretty nice. Lots of dark stewed fruit, figs and a molasses like rum note. Softly spicy yeast with a bit of warming alcohol. Itís got a lingering sweetness but it certainly isnít cloying at all. A touch of mint and some herbal notes, but itís generally malt dominated. The yeast is restrained (which is actually quite good in this case). A whole lot better than Iíd thought it would be.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Deep dark brown body with a thick, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of alcohol, pit fruit sugars and a bit of yeast - fairly nice. Medium-bodied; Assertive sweetness up front with candy sugar, some pit fruits and raisins, a little bit of yeast and a good alcohol warmth at the end. Aftertaste shows mostly pit fruit sweetness, a bit of earthiness and a prolonged yeastie flavour that shows well. Overall, a nice beer that has a good flavour profile, if not super complex, but a good beer to sample. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased a few hours earlier today at New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 01-November-2013 for US$3.00, sampled in my hotel room here in New York on 01-November, yes this 750 mL bottle was purchased for 3 DOLLARS!
