DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Jun 2, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Doboy - thanks Ed. Clear mahogany pour, rather spare bubbly head that settles quickly. Hints of smoke overlay molasses and some dark fruit. Medium body, quite effervescent which does not complement this beer. Healthy dose of caramel sweetness up front ushers in a peppery bitterness. Still, some sweetness and smoke lingers in the finish. Not exactly stellar, but better than its rating suggests. Lose the fizziness, and it’s much better. DandyWolfFloyd (331), Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 5, 2009 Aroma is smoky in dead, nice malty roast smoke. Appearance is a dark full color. No head notably. Flavor is a bit smoky, mostly roasty malts. Not to smooth a bit watery and a bit astringent. jimmack34 (560), Lancaster, Ohio, USA Mar 15, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours copper brown with a little soft foam head. Smells of caramel, burnt sugar, and candy. Tastes of weird smokey, burnt sugar, cork, some vanilla, and hazelnut. Very unusual beer. decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Mar 4, 2009 A bit of a funky aroma that is not all smokeCaramelly flavor with alot of smoke and peet. Finishes with a bit of a metallic flavor and a clinging smokiness. Palate is a bit fizzy for me. A bit of a cloyiness badnloose (99), North Hollywood, California, USA Feb 11, 2009 Smoked? Really? Too thin/watery for me to think of it as such. I got more of a vanilla/syrup kick out of it, probably from some caramelized malts. Enjoyable and drinkable, nonetheless. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Feb 4, 2009 Good smoked porter, but not quite on the level as some of the great ones (Alaskan Smoked Porter, for example). Brownish amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma is malty and a little smoky. Nice roasted malt on the flavor, but could use more smokiness. Taste is mildly sweet. Mouthfeel is medium, maybe a tiny bit thin. tomthompson89 (1453), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 31, 2009 amberish color, tan foam. nose is odd smoke and sweet malts. flavor is some hops sweet dried fruits and smoke. intresting but odd KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Jan 31, 2009 Pours a really nice deep amber color with a thin white head. It was a good thing Ididn’t know this was a smoked when I tried it. They are probably one of my least favorite styles of beer. This one however didn’t smell or taste smoked so much as it tasted like caramelized sugar that is just at the perfect tipping point between being tasty and being burned. The flavor is very malty and sweet with a that just about burned backend. Overall pretty impressive for a smoked beer however.
