| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Oct 21, 2005 BOTTLED. Brown with a very small head. Aromas of malt, rotten something-or-other, and smoke. Funky burned flavor- gotta be the smoke (I didn’t realize it was a smoked when I was sampling it)... has a bit of a chicoryish flavor, but not quite. I’ve come to the conclusion that the advertising gurus of Magic Hat have come up with the plan to make catchy, nice labels in order to try and make up for the low quality products produced by the brewery. I’ve yet to find something from magic Hat that’s impressed me- but I’ll keep trying. bitter (1137), Henderson, Nevada, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Oct 18, 2005 12 oz bottle: poured dark brown with an ominous tan-white head, na maybe that was because i was watching the old 80’s version of amityville horror in honor of the halloween season. nose of subtle spice and tanics, slight malt filter. on the palate first pushes a sweet malt character that blends to an unfermented trick. makes you believe its big and full of flavor but dies trying. more sweet molasses and off flavors push. reminds me of a dunkel weissen or weak double. not so impressed with these beers. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 17, 2005 Updated: Feb 23, 2008Bottle (12oz). Poured deep ruby-brown, smallish off-white head. Aroma of woodsmoke, roast malt and hops - mostly smoke - I like it smoky but I like a little more going on. Taste is smoky and salty but there’s an almost honey-sweetness which gets cloying at times; what hops there are taste decidedly dry. Mouthfeel is pretty average, the finish is slightly more bitter than sweet, it’s almost like a mild Islay single-malt in its aftertaste. Interesting, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it again. mkgrenwel (420), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Oct 17, 2005 malty, smoky aroma. Almost fishy (smoked fish).
Smoky, malty in the front. Banana and bitter in the back and aftertaste. Little hops, dry malty bitterness. Dry finish.
I guess i’m not a huge fan of the style.
