3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 MoDog (927) - Griffith, Indiana, USA - OCT 23, 2008
Poured from a 12oz bottle and served in a shaker. This beer poured a mirky, dirty copper hue with a nice head of creamy tan foam that showed some decent retention. A small amount of slippery lacing was left around the glass. The aroma contained notes of smokey caramel and dried fruits. The flavor consisted of caramel and toffee, a mellow smokiness, dark fruits, and a hint of maple syrup. Nicely balanced. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and had light to moderate carbonation. After trying their so called hefe, I wasn’t expecting much, but this was a pleasent surprise.

poured a nice brown hue with an off-white head. Aroma had a very pronounced smoke note to it with some malts to it. The smoke was never over powering just pleasant throughout the bottle. A nice smooth finish.

Bottled. Poured deep reddish-orange with a short, but well-retained toffee head.. nice lacing as it descended. The aroma picked up sweeter drawn caramel with overtones of lightly-smoked peat and earth.. really nice. The flavor had less-sweet caramel and toffee at the core surrounded by earthy highlights, pine resin, and smoked, slightly sour woody notes.. finished with a bit more sourness and bitterness, in an entirely refreshing way. Medium-bodied with low carbonation and nice balance on the palate.. smoke usage was moderate at most.. I’d gladly drink several more.

One of my favorite Magic Hat beers. I like the smokey aspect of it, but it needs to have more hop character to it to be a great beer. It’s pretty complex but needs to be cleaner as well.

12oz bottle: Dark amber body with a everlasting, soapy tan head. Stale malts meet the nose, offering little except for mild caramel and old coffee. The supposed peat addition becomes somewhat apparent in the body, but I have to search for it. I’m not sure if I would categorize this as a smoked beer, maybe Scottish ale would be more appropriate. Either way, seems stale, one dimensional and forgettable.
