Aroma of smokey malts and caramel. Taste was more of the same with a burnt caramel finish. Not the prettiest beer in the world but a solid seasonal. chicagodri (1041), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 2, 2008 Pours a clear copper with a thin off white head. Glad to have a smoked beer in their variety park of bottles. Bread and malt in the aroma and flavor. A lot of malt. Just a little touch of smoke flavor. I think if you are going to do a smoke beer it should really be heavy smoke flavor. This was a mild smoked beer. Still enjoyable, but left me hoping for more. The aroma is of hops and warm bread. Taste of sweet malts, caramel, and a bit on the hoppy side. There was a hint of smoky flavor, but i would like to drink this again under better conditions. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 28, 2008 Pours a dark brown/copper with a decent size head and intermittent lacing down the glass. Bready, malty scent. Taste matches it -- biscuit, bready, super malty. I can’t detect any actual smoke in this beer, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless. Thumbs up. Smoked beer it is! Quickly diminished foam, solid amber body and malts sweetness come through. Dmalone102 (217), Denver, Colorado, USA

It was on the malty side of the mysterious malt/hop balance. Pretty drinkable and worth buying. I recommend A fresh growler from the brewery. Out of a bottle just does not taste the same. Its a very pleasant color of warm brown like maple syrup. It has a full and sticky off white head that smells of scotch and hopps. The taste is similar to the smell. There are hints of scotch and smokiness, brown sugar and carmel. But the addition of the hops balances it all out perfectly. I am not to keen on sweet beers. I prefer IPA’s and bitterness. But the sweetness and scotch flavors are balanced just right by the hops. One of my favorite seasonal beers to drink throughout the fall.
