2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 roder60 (1244) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 1, 2007
Pours a dark brown, clear but cant see through unless held up to light. Small amount of fizzy offwhite head. Aroma is of carmalized sugar, almost burnt marshmellowish. Flavor is very sweet and malty, slight earthy hop presence. Not very much in the way of a smoked flavor. Tastes a lot like my last homebrew. Just so so.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 bubbleflubber (1231) - Asheville, North Carolina, USA - OCT 28, 2006
Pours a chocolate walnut with a generous off-white soapy head that immediately begins to ring the glass with lace. There are some doughy notes to the nose, as well as some sweet malt and chocolate. Some decent malt upfront, with a hidden sweetness inside of a smoked, slightly roasted atmosphere. The finish still has a bit of that Magic Hat salt acridity to it... not terribly bad, though. It works ok enough, I guess. Nothing particularly special about this brew. The mouthfeel is round, but it doesn’t have the true "winter" seasonal feel that it’s touted for..... more of a maltier peat-induced marzen or bock that works for spring months... Again, nothing terrible, but not my session of choice.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ApisAles (1231) - Greenbelt, Maryland, USA - JAN 31, 2009
Pours a really nice deep amber color with a thin white head. It was a good thing Ididn’t know this was a smoked when I tried it. They are probably one of my least favorite styles of beer. This one however didn’t smell or taste smoked so much as it tasted like caramelized sugar that is just at the perfect tipping point between being tasty and being burned. The flavor is very malty and sweet with a that just about burned backend. Overall pretty impressive for a smoked beer however.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 bigrond (1226) - factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 20, 2005
I think this is the first smoked I’ve ever had. The smoke flavor comes out in the after taste. Tastes and feels alot like a english pale ale then comes the smoke. Not a good brew.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 JAF737300 (1221) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 23, 2007
Pours amber with notes of earth and cocoa. There are hop like herbaciousness on the palate that give to a malt like sweet note on the finish.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 jimmack (1221) - Nutley, New Jersey, USA - OCT 5, 2005
On tap at Barcade. Clear, light brown color with a small tan head. Mild smoked malt aroma with some caramel. Flavor is pretty much the same, with a hint of butterscotch on the finish.
2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 jstraw (1217) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 29, 2008
UPDATED: OCT 30, 2008 Brown with decent, foamy tan head / Faint nose of caramel and sweet malt / Light to medium body, fizzy, thin in fruit and finish / Flavors of caramel and coca cola with peat notes / Pedestrian.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 wilkie (1209) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - DEC 22, 2007
Bottle (rating from a while ago-found on receipt that had been through washer!). Pours dark, brown, some reddish qualities, and a medium off-white head. Aroma is yeasty, earthy, roasty, and a bit of wheat. Flavor is yeasty--tastes like a dunklebock to me, not getting any smoke flavor, rich, but not memorable. Aftertaste of earthiness... Okay, but not that great.
3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 puboflyons (1190) - Allenstown, New Hampshire, USA - AUG 28, 2007
Bottle with an expiration date of Dec ’07. Pours a decent reddish-black. Not a whole lot of head or lacing. A kind of chocolate-like aroma at first but then I pick up whiffs of the smoked brew. A solid mouth feel and an awesome smoky-sweet flavor. Really kind of unique. Another Magic Hat brew that I am happy to have found.
