COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Earthy, rich and steeped in autumn’s magic: it’s an ale of change. This potent infusion is haunted by memories of summer and the first frost on abandoned fields. Jinx prepares the bones for snow. It has the glint of golden maples at peak and finishes light as an ode to the fading sun. A bit of peat-smoked malt imparts a subtle hint of smoke that reminds us of fall’s bonfires. Available in the Fall.

Dark rusty red/brown with a pleasant activity and 1/2-inch rocky head. Earthy/fruity aroma. The flavor is almost reminiscent of dirty berries. Quite smooth and pleasant. Surprised to see this listed as a smoke beer.

UPDATED: OCT 17, 2005 Poured a reddish copper color with a small light tan head that diminished to a film and . Sweet caramel malt, and a lightly burnt fire aroma. Lots of smoke in the taste, but it is balanced by light roastiness and a nice sweetness (chocolate). A light citrus also helps to finish this brew off.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2004 Earthy, malty aroma with some peat malt noticeable. Dark amber and very clear with a finger of white head that receeds with some lacing. Although, I would hesitate to call this a smoked beer, the hint of peat is a nice offset to a very sweet and long flavoured beer which has some mild earthy bitterness in the finish. Medium body. I've had this a couple of times now and I enjoy it more and more each time. On tap at the brewery and bottled.

Bottle shared with tupalev. Pours a clear bubbly dark copper with a small diminishing white head. Nice smoky malt aroma, reminds me of whisky, along with some toffee and hops. The flavour, even though it’s a mild version of a Smoked beer, is still pretty good. It’s malty with some smoke, sugar and a little whisky. Thin body. I quite enjoyed this.

Bottle. Pours a hazy orange copper color with a small off light tan head. Light yeasty spice on the nose. Thick honey feel in the mouth, with very fine carbonation. Light mildly sweet finish. Overall a very nice but almost muted beer. I feel as if there could be a little more boldness here.

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2005 Sept 2001: Wish Magic Hat’s brews were as good as their first-rate bottles and descriptions. This one just struck me as bland in every way. The nose is pretty nice, pleasantly hoppy and slightly spicy, but the flavor is bland and the finish way too bitter. Pass. 7/3/6/2/11 2.9

Four years later: having had this many times bottled and draft this year, it’s time for a rerate. This to me is a near-perfect session smoked, lightly herbal and sweet with just enough hops to keep the sweet smokiness from overpowering, with a clean fairly light body and just a trace of bitterness, nicely woody and fruity. It’s not really a great beer, but an easy one to drink in quantity and there aren’t many in the style I’d say that about.

Greetings from Virginia. Brown with a fizzy white head. Brown sugar and molasses aroma. Thick rich citrus and molasses taste with a grainy finish.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 7 Oct) Dark amber colour with mahogany notes. Fruity nose with dark fruit, raisins, figs, caramel, notes of chocolate and smokey hints of rubber. Fruity taste with dark fruit, figs, dates, caramel, hints of chocolate and some balanced bitterness in the finish. Nice and warming, but lacking something extra.

Bottle. Translucent auburn. Small but seemingly fizzt tan head. It’s reduced to a ring of foam within seconds. Nose is faint smoky notes, burnt caramel, malt, and a touch of toffee. Some light spicy hops as well. Taste is restrained smokiness, roasty malts, some caramel, light spicy hops and dark fruits. Body is light-medium with a medium carbonation feeling on the palate. Finishes with more smokiness, caramel, bit sweeter malts, and some Bit-O-Honey. I think this would pair nicely with a glazed ham or a ham sandwich.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy light tan colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a slightly hazy light brown colored body. The mild aroma was brown malt. The smooth mouth feel was tingly at the start with a mellow finish caramel aftertaste. The mild flavor contained notes of chamomile malt and brown malt. A decent one that I would consider buying again.
