Sep 27, 2006 Dark orange-brown with no head. Very strong sweet scent, honey, malt, soy sauce, hops, spices. Taste is similar, wide range of sweet, salty, and sour with lingering slight bitterness. Very interesting taste, though not very strong. Smoky. Sparkly-feeling but not overly carbonated.

Sep 4, 2007 Bottle. Clear copper color with a small head. Aroma of caramel malt and grains. Tastes of sweet grains and leaves, followed by the campfire smoky finish. It seems like a really nice fall seasonal, but the label art is terrible.

Nov 22, 2007 3/4 pint, bbe Dec 07. Dark copper-brown and hazy. Small head is persistent. Earthy-spiced wood and malt aroma. Flavor is roasty nut, earthy spice, slight pepper zing, and dried wood. Palate is medium-bodied, smooth, a little spicy-tingly, and dry. Barely detected the smoke until the glass was nearly empty. Nice beer that would fare better in the Scotch Ale (or American Strong) category.

Aug 26, 2007 12 oz bottle. Pours a beautiful caramel color. A nice deep reddish brown. Nose is malty and earth like. Did not get any smoke in the aroma at all. This is a nice malty, earthy, sweet, caramel flavored brew. I don’t see where this is a smoked brew though. There is nothing in this brew that reminds me of "fall’s bonfires". A little tiny bit of smokiness came thru at the tale end.

Oct 20, 2007 pours transparent dark brown with a thin off white head. aroma is slightly nutty with a hint of alcohol. tastes of wood, very light smoke, and maple sugar. very little bitter edge, quite smooth. body is light. carbonation is mild. nice depth, and very drinkable.

Oct 23, 2008 Poured from a 12oz bottle and served in a shaker. This beer poured a mirky, dirty copper hue with a nice head of creamy tan foam that showed some decent retention. A small amount of slippery lacing was left around the glass. The aroma contained notes of smokey caramel and dried fruits. The flavor consisted of caramel and toffee, a mellow smokiness, dark fruits, and a hint of maple syrup. Nicely balanced. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and had light to moderate carbonation. After trying their so called hefe, I wasn’t expecting much, but this was a pleasent surprise.

Aug 28, 2007 Bottle with an expiration date of Dec ’07. Pours a decent reddish-black. Not a whole lot of head or lacing. A kind of chocolate-like aroma at first but then I pick up whiffs of the smoked brew. A solid mouth feel and an awesome smoky-sweet flavor. Really kind of unique. Another Magic Hat brew that I am happy to have found.

Oct 24, 2008 From a 12 oz bottle. Pours a rich deep amber color. Very light head disappeared quickly. Slightly smoky aroma. Taste was pretty good with a light smoky flavor and light earth malt tones. Very nice. I feared that the smoky peat flavor would be overpowering but that wasn’t the case. I would definitely drink this one again.
