The Evolved Euro-Style Lager. Brewed to spur the people to unite in the fight for imbibing emancipation and smash the oppressive tyranny of malt monotony! Mother Lager was a refreshing, evolved alternative to the familiar Euro-style imports, exported from the People’s Republic of Vermont.

Non existent head with a skunky flavor and smell. Flat and skunky just about sums up the experience. Mother Lager? Mother of what?

This beer has come back in the Magic Hat 2016 spring back. A nice malty flavor. Sweet. It’s crips and a good beer as the weather (hopefully) starts to warm up. A little yeasty with that class pale lager finish.

UPDATED: SEP 9, 2008 8/25/2004. I’ve become to expect good things from Magic Hat but this is the first Lager I’ve tried from them so I wasn’t sure what I’d get. Golden color topped by a thin head. Only a little bit of lacing on the glass and the aroma is slightly skunked. There’s not a whole lot that’s enjoyable with the taste either. Musty, corn flavor with some bitter hops mixed in. Not really that smooth. Slightly sweet but not as sweet as most Magic Hat brews. This reminds me more of domestic crap than a good Magic Hat brew.

An average lager, even though I love German lagers. Would definitely drink it again, but won’t seek it out. Musty taste was present with a sweet malt finish. Nice golden color.

Bottle. Pours golden with a decent sized white head. Aroma of sweet malts, floral hops, and spices. Flavor is smooth, sweet up-front with a bitter tail. Good body, average brew.

Bottle. Pours golden with a minimal white head that is loose. Aroma of sweet malts, slight spices, and grain. Flavor is sweet, smooth, grainy, with a no flavor finish. Boring brew, forgetable.

This beer looks like the platonic ideal of beers. Light amber/orange color and a fluffy white head that dissipates slowly. Unfortunately, the taste doesn’t quite live up to the appearance. There’s a distinctly sweet taste up front and no finish at all. The aroma is a bit floral, but weak. Overall, it’s a passable session beer if it’s all you can find, but nothing I’d ever actively hunt down.

(12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with Rastacouere, thanks David!) Drink before end of February (2006). I was holding out hope that Magic Hat might pull off a pleasant-tasting pale lager, but you can find ’hope’ in the dictionary between ’fat chance’ and ’loser’. This is what I guess it’s supposed to be: an approximation of a cheap eastern European pale lager. It’s sweet and grainy, kind of husky actually, mildly bitter, with a modest malt liquor type of alcholic bite in the finish. The nose is sweet and husky, but that’s about it. Light-medium bodied and pleasantly carbonated. Pale to medium straw in color and slightly hazy, the small, white head dissipates rapidly without leaving any lace on the glass. Oh well, not very good, but I should have expected as much.
