lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Sep 1, 2009 Clear red-orange, soft light tan head. Big spicy hop aroma, caramel, fruity notes. Taste is more big spicy pine hops, caramel malt, citrus notes. Two solid Magic Hat beers in a row? What is this world coming to? kimcgolf (824), Dacula, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2009 Enjoyed from the tap, came a fairly dark amber-brown with thick off-white head that lingered well and left good lacing. Aroma was more along the lines of a Pale Ale, with hints of citrusy fruit blended with sweet malty caramel. Unlike many of Magic Hat’s beers that tend to be on the thin side, mouthfeel on Roxy was full and somewhat tingly. Taste mirrored the citrus fruit and caramel mix of the nose, and the finish was long and on the bittersweet side.
One of the better offerings I’ve had from Magic Hat. phaleslu (427), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Aug 31, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Autumn 2009 variety pack. Pours hazy rose-orange-brown with medium off white head. Aroma of hops, malt, and caramel. Flavor of hops, malt, caramel, wood, spice, and earth. Bitter hops were way more aggressive than I’d expected for this beer. Medium body, medium carbonation, earthy texture, and bitter finish. HopBackDoc (393), Hatboro, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 30, 2009 Poured a mahogany color with thin head. Malty aroma. Flavor was caramel malts, bitter hops, spice and nuts. Medium bodied with as bitter finish. Not bad, not great. Swalden28 (1440), McKinney, Texas, USA Aug 29, 2009 Bottle from Kegs & Barrels in Plano, TX. Pours a dark, hazy amber and a beige creamy head. Aroma of malt, a little nut, some caramel. Flavor is malty, nutty, some spice, grass, fruit, nice small bitter. Mouth feel is medium body with high carbonation. Overall, worth a try, not bad at all..... Pookie9121 (83), Columbia, South Carolina, USA Aug 28, 2009 12 oz. Bottle. A nice rose colored beer. Light to medium head. Pleasant smell. The hops in this were different that the ones I am used to having. Good mix with the malt though. Good beer. Recommended. williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 26, 2009 Uber-cloudy, rose-colored and thick. Finger of pillowy head. Murky and gritty. Color of a grenadine.
The smell is severe: gritty and spicy barley malt with a woody, oaky, pine-tinged hop. Heavy and brutal, especially for Magic Hat. The resin is extreme.
The taste is gritty and bitter. Major, woody hop. Hops completely dominate this brew. Cut grass; simcoe hops. Some minor toasted malts. Malts are of the English variety.
The relative smoothness makes this so utterly drinkable, although it still has gritty, chalky qualities. It’s delicious, if intense. Really bitter, really woody. A tad too extreme but delicious. Sonicdescent (374), Donora, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 23, 2009 Poured into pint glass, colored a nice red, leans more golden in the light. A generous white head leaves behind some lace. When I think beer, I think something looking like this.
Smell is very faint. Hops dominate what is there, hopefully the taste is a bit more robust.
Taste is of a lightly hopped but unremarkable lager. Leaves a decent aftertaste and doesn’t dry your mouth out. I actually appreciate this more as the drink goes on. Still nothing outstanding but solid in it’s own right.
Mouthfeel is good for this style, light bodied and moderately carbonated, not overly so that it overshadows the taste as is all to common in a lager.
Drinkability is good. I probably wouldn’t go right to this beer, but would drink it if I happened upon it.
