Flowery hoppy aroma with a hint of citrus. Crisp hoppy flavor is balanced quite well by caramel malts and spices. Nice earthy taste. Perfectly carbonated with a dry texture. I was pleasantly surprised by this MH offering. kassner (441), Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 23, 2009 Very nice and refreshing, dry hops and sour notes. Very slightly cloudy more brown than amber, I liked the woodsy hops character. caresville (106), Vernon, New Jersey, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 19, 2009 i had bought that seasonal 12 pack with a bunch of different kinds of magic hat and i had had all of them except this one. it was worth the wait, this is the best magic hat i have ever tasted. i drank it out of the bottle cause i was already drunk but i remember this spicy bitterness that was so unique and it was very hoppy. smelled of all different kinds of tropical fruits but kept that woody, forresty IPA smell. this is good stuff, i cant wait until i can have some more and thats hopefully soon since its seasonal. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 17, 2009 Looks kind of like iced tea, maybe a little cloudy. Smells very earthy, chocolatey. There is a surprising amount of coffee in the flavor, maybe a little chocolate, and a rather unpleasent asprin like bitterness in the finish. yesyouam (589), Fairport, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 12, 2009 Magic Hat Roxy Rolles is a dim, deep reddish amber ale with a huge, frothy, rocky, creamy yellow-tan head that has excellent retention and lacing. Looks superb. It has a very grassy aroma. Yes, it smells like grass and hay. It’s medium-light bodied and pretty smooth. The finish is a little watery. It tastes like grassy hops. There’s not too much malt flavor and it’s a tid bit astringent. There’s not too much going on, but at least it’s bitter. otakuden (518), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 4, 2009 Ask anyone about Magic Hat Brewing and they automatically think about #9, a standard American Pale Ale. Is it great? Not really, but it is good. Magic Hat, like many others, strives to brew tasty, sessionable beers that are good any time of the day and during any occasion. They won’t leave you speechless while curling your toes in eye-rolling ecstasy per say, but there is something to be said about solid consistency. I’ve partaken of their #9, so I am curious to see how their Roxy Rolles, an amber ale, measures up.
Nestled underneath her rocky tuft is a sea of melted amber and resinous sap, fractured by shards of orange and copper as the passing light pierces her body. As her body settles, so does her head in a rather lackadaisical manner. I can tell already that she is going to be sticky stubborn maiden. Nature’s breeze hasn’t figured out a way to penetrate the walls in my apartment, yet somehow with no real assistance on my part, I am able to catch a gentle waft of her nose. Sweet and hoppy, caramel and maple enhance her tropical side of lemons, kiwi, pineapple, oranges and tangerines. Delicately fragrant, a crisp crunch of melba toast offers solid support. Though her nose may have been uniquely enticing, our first encounter is light, subtle, and a bit on the thin side. Keeping everything in line is a solid backdrop of dry melba toast and breads which lead into the brisk snap of fresh fall apples. Keeping her sweet side busy are oranges, tangerines, pineapple, and kiwi. Maple and caramel are subdued, complimenting the toast and fruit more than overriding it. Moving further along in our journey together, citric acidity lends a lingering bitterness to the tip of my tongue and back of my throat. She fluxuates between sweet and fruity, then toasty, dry and bitter. A session brew full of flavor, though her body was a bit too thin to support everything that her palate was trying to accomplish.
Overall, not bad. I probably wouldn’t seek out another Roxy Rolles, but by no means was she a drain pour. It’s just that when it comes to amber ales, there are better options available for my quaffing. yobdoog (1431), Woodridge NY, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 17, 2009 Nice bright red amber color fluffy head. Aroma and taste is pretty hoppy. Pine and citrus and not that balanced. Some caramel malts but mostly juicy hops. Not bad. jake65 (1698), Williston, North Dakota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 1, 2009 Bottle - thanks beerbill. Pours a murky orangish brown with a finger of creamy beige head. Nose of citrus, caramel, and light florals. Tastes a bit sweet, wet-hopped with citrus and light florals. A little caramel and toffee. It has that sense of nuts and bready malt like a brown ale, but still has plenty of citrus and sweetness like a hoppy amber or APA. A fun session brew.
