Color is dark ruby
It starts out like a dry IPA and then the fruity malty amber comes in. It’s a nice change of pace from IPAs. Definitely hoppy enough to qualify as an IPA. Very pleasant bitter finish. Jine (896), Nutley, New Jersey, USA

Dark red-brown and clear with a medium-sized lasting head. Orange-grapefruit, toasted pecan and pine straw aromas are excellent. Flavor follows with a mildly sweet entry of the same mix, becomes more cocoa, roasted nut and hoppier throughout until finally the finish is just pine-citrus enough. Nearly medium-bodied, smooth and dry. Seems almost a cross of a brown and a pale. Definitely not your typical amber, and goes against the style description provided here, but I like it. wilkie (1189), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

Very aromatic hop character of pine, and citrus, slight malt. Flavor is similar, with a very good balance of hops and malt. Good aftertaste of citrus and pine. Very drinkable and enjoyable beer. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 18, 2007 Pours a hazy brown with an orange hue. Smells of pine hops and peat malt. The flavor is bitter, peat, earthy with some good hop balance. It is very smooth and drinkable. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 17, 2007 Well, this poured a clear amber, big tan head. immediate nose of hops and skunk? from a cardboard covered brown bottle? The head is nice and foamy, retained well. Taste has no trace of skunk. This is fuller in the mouth than the nose gives, and has a pleasant hop character, balanced nicely with the malt back bone. Well done. Just smelled bad? McGarnigle (307), Rochester, New York, USA

Body is medium, maybe a little light, with fairly heavy carbonation. It tastes like an APA with citric/resiny hops, but the malts are different. That’s what makes it a winter beer I suppose. This can be viewed as a failed APA or a failed amber, but I think it’s interesting and tasty. chronictonic (402), Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, USA

Better hop flavor in this one compared to some of the other Magic Hat hoppier beers. Nothing too noteworthy - non-offensive, not really memorable. Bring back the Heart of Darkness dammit!!
