2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 ounce bottle. Pours a translucent dark brown color with a medium-sized rocky beige head. Quite unusual, I have never seen a Saison that had coloring similar to a porter or brown ale. Aroma is light toasted malt with citrus overtones. Tangy toasted malt flavor with light smoky, cocoa notes. Mid taste has some spicy hops. Finish is brief and dry. A confusing beer that defies the style. Not bad, just different.

I didnít think this beer was super complex, but it did have some strange flavors. It seemed like a mix of malts and spice. Sweet finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Eventually I found the name on yet another confusing Magic Hat bottle. The beer is much darker than I expected, almost like a thin stout. A little bit of reddish highlight shows around the edges and the head is a thin tan affair after a couple minutes of dying down. Aromas are autumn-y... leaf litter and a little bit of brown sugar is about all I get, but it is pleasant enough, especially for a beer in the 4% range. First sip reveals a nice and clean dark beer - not sure if I would call it a saison, but thatís my problem - with lots of autumn leaves and a little bit of a nut edge to it. There is a hint of lemongrass that keeps it interesting and I have to say that I like this beer. Normally I find Magic Hat to underperform my hopes, but this one is very nice.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Opening up the afternoon with a brew by a brewer who frequently underwhelms me. This saison pours reddish brown with a medium sized off white head, some lacing.. looks decently good. The aroma is pretty much caramel and roast.. almost a brown ale.. there is some mild yeasty notes. This beer is very basic.. and more of a Belgian ale than a saison. There is mild dark fruit, a lot of brown sugar.. but it is just boring.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
A dark brown with a white head. Little aroma of burnt oak. It is missing complexity and instead only has indistinguishable dark wood notes.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Lightly smoky, dark Belgian aroma -- malty, yeasty. Dark brown beer, clear, thin ivory head. Bad label, standard US longneck. Part of the Night of the Living Dead mixpack - some of whom, Iím starting to suspect, are used in the manufacture of this beer. Tangy, a little creosote, dry, astringent. Medium light body. Belgian yeast aftertaste over tar flavors.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from sampler. Nose is fruit and meady. Starts a bit tart with a bit of hop bite mixed in. Fairly light saison and balance is ok. Decent for Warner weather or with spicy food.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Itís an overly sweet brown ale with a little bit of wild yeast thrown in. I donít know why I bother.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours dark ruby brown with a small tan head. Smells minty and herbal, like spruce. Taste is stale coffee and hints of mint. Light-to-medium bodied with a slick, wet texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Magic Hat Sťance finishes with a mild roastiness.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a moderate tan head on it. Nose is a little sour and darkly fruity with a nice little bit of funk to it. Taste is a bit sour and fruity up front, but actually finishes with chocolate in there, which is weirding me out. Very odd beer.
