1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a WTF IS THIS. Dark ruby body, two finger khaki head - there was literally no warning of this being a dark saison. None. Anyways, the head doesnít have very good retention, but does leave a bit of lacing behind. Iím not docking points because of the look, though.
S: The aroma should have thrown me a curveball about the look. Itís quite high in both caramel malts and sweetness. A bit of oatmeal presence, also. Not very yeasty at all, thereís little sense this is even a dark saison rather than a simple session porter. And I havenít even got to the unpleasantly smoky, rotting meat notes Iím picking up! : The dog food quality tanks the nose utterly - in fact, I kind of donít want to drink this now...
T/M: It tastes like itís trying so hard to be a dark saison. It has the (somewhat) lively feel, and it has the dry finish. But the unpleasant melange of roast, caramel, smokiness (not the good smokiness you get out of Schlenkerlaís rauchbiers, either), and wateriness ruins any chances of this being remotely good. Despite the high sweetness, the feel is okay for the style. Otherwise? Bah, who cares.
O: The drizzling shits, plain and simple. I normally avoid Magic Hat, and this brew reminded me exactly why I do so...

While I find magic hat beers to be hit or miss I found this one pretty enjoyable. Aroma dark malts sure there is some chocolate. Nice dark appearance foamy head. First taste smoky good going down but quickly fades. Earthy woodsy roasted malts nutty like a brown ale. Hard to pinpoint works for me as a different kind of beer.

0.8 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
This was among the worst beers I have ever tasted. I was very intrigued at the idea of a black saison. The pour made me giddy as the dark, almost stout color with the low viscosity of a saison.
God, what an awful taste. Just terrible. Not like a saison, just a blah unsweetened chocolate yeasty mess. Nothing mixed well.
I even tried a second bottle in case it was just a bad cap or something. Nope. Just a terrible, terrible beer.

Nice color and head at least. Thatís about all it has going for it though. Very little aroma, and not a distinctive taste.

Harsh somewhat metallic aroma that is somewhat neutral. Taste is a bit bitter, with a bit of roasty bitterness.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle purchased a couple of (or 3 or 4?) months ago. Tangy aroma dominated by roasted malts. Very rural, earthy smell. Salty and a touch sour aroma features a dark chocolate scent. Smoky and with a touch of barnyard funk. Dunkel weizenbock-like smell that is not at all what I was expecting but is quite interesting and good. Pours surprisingly quite dark. Translucent dark brown with an amber hue. The most remarkable aspect of the appearance is the head, which is large and frothy and has a creamy beige color. That may sound like an ordinary color for head, but the shade is different from what I have previously experienced and is appealing. Produces sporadic lacing. Dry, roasted flavor that evokes a porter or a light-bodied stout. That said, there is an underlying wheat taste. A bit of a bready or muffin-y finish. Long, dry aftertaste. Light to medium body. Frothy in the palate. Easy to drink but insubstantial palate effects. This beer is quite different from most saisons and my expectations, but it ended up exceeding those expectations. It is quite flavorful and aromatic for a beer with such a low ABV. It tastes more like something that you would expect from a style-bending nano-brewery than from a nationally distributed brewer.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Aroma: bready, yeasty, typical saison aroma. Appearance is dark brown with big tan head. Flavor is roasted malts with hints of burnt caramel. Smells like a saison and tastes like a run-of-the-mill brown ale.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a short beige head. Aroma was earthy with roasted malts, caramel and light spices. Flavor of caramel, fruit, earth, light chocolate and had a odd tartness.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: beer pours with a very large tan head, the beer is dark for a saison, it's a very dark maroon color that almost looks black
Aroma: sweet, sugar, some dark roasted malt, faint, lemon, bread
Taste: the dark roasted malt is definitely there, you get hints of sourness and tartness,
Palate: leaves the mouth dry, lively carbonation, minimal dark malt aftertaste
Overall: certainly an interesting take on a saison, the dark malt is stronger than the saison wildness but you do get some tart

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a very dark brown that was unappealing. I really didn't care much for this beer at all.
