3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ozarkspops (197) - - FEB 17, 2013Hazy copper orange pour. Fluffy eggshell head. Earthy and floral hop aroma. Some malt sweetness as well. I pick up a little smokiness. Very citrusy initial flavors. Very orange-like. Nice dry spiciness from the rye. One of the better rye IPA's out there.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 onceblind (2535) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAY 21, 2013
Hazy dark amber with a generous and persistent off-cream foamy head. Aroma is toasty, nutty, full of toffee with a strong backing of pine resin and some earthy lemon rind. Flavor starts kinda bitter with some earthy and leafy hoppy resins, but then quickly turns to this rye bread and toast note, followed with a lot of toffee and gentle earthiness. In fact, there is so much nutty toasty toffee that the entire finish of the flavor strikes me as a brown ale.

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2013 12 oz. bottle at the in-laws. Pours a cloudy orange-amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, rye, sweat, brown sugar, and orange peel. Flavor of caramel malts, rye, tangerine, and tropical fruits. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a malty mouthfeel. Rye on the finish. Not bad.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 unclemattie (3706) - Georgia, USA - MAY 17, 2013
12oz bottle. Cap read, "Liquor before beer... are you kidding." Well, actually, tonight, I did think about it. Pour red/amber color, white foam, nice lacing. Mild grain nose, nice wooded hop character. Tastes of earthy, bitter hops. Velvety sweet caramel malts. Smooth, creamy texture. Very well balanced. Spicy tingle in the finish. Medium bodied. A very nice, very well hopped, RYE IPA. (3703)

Location: 12 oz bottle from Giannone, 5/16/13, Drinking this one virtually with jcos!
Aroma: The nose of this one is sweet malts, rye bread, and some light earth/pine hops
Appearance: Pours a dark reddish color with a a beige head that leaves heavy lace on the glass
Flavor: The taste is lightly sweet, rye malts, some caramel, mild butter, and fairly light hops
Palate: The body is medium (leaning light), a little sticky, with an okay, but slightly off mouthfeel
Overall Impression:
I wasn’t too impressed by this one. It’s pretty run of the mill. The rye actually shines decently enough, but the IPA flavors do not.

Summary: This beer hit the right notes, but there is some sweetness to it that I’m getting that is a bit too strong.

P: Hazed brown orange tinted body with micro bubble tan head.
S: Spicy rye, bready malt, dark fruits and toffee.
T/M: Roasted caramel, heavy rye, spiced rum, toffee candy, caramel apples, dark fruit and pine resin. Medium full spices body that Coates the palate with pine and fruit. Leaves of film on the top if the throat like sharp cheddar does.
O: By far the best Magic Hat beer I have had. This has great robust flavors and a dialed in spice profile to please.
