Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT. Pours clear, honey-gold with a fine, foamy white head. Nose has some mint notes, spruce, menthol. Light sweet flavor, some bread, a bit of pine needles and spruce, some bitter leaves. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Mellow sweetness to finish, further spruce, slight menthol cooling, dry pine needles. So so.

Bottle poured a clear amber with a lasting ivory head. Aromas of carmel, spruce, citrus mand earthiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, spruce, earthiness and a hint of fruittiness with a smooth lingering spruce finish.

12 ounce bottle, Winterland pack, from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a clear light amber color with a medium sized creamy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of spruce, mint and caramel malts. The taste is spruce, mint, earth, tea, caramel malts and a bitter finish. Medium bodied. Decent.

355mL. Clear lighter amber, medium off white foam. Okay lace. Nose is sweet orange, marmalade, pine, resin, biscuit. Taste is metallic, soapy, drained, then very medicinal spruce. Palate is diacetyl and soap. Ick.

Bottle. Pale dirty orange pour with minimal head. Grassy, light spruce, and a hint of cat pee. Not good. Not much from these guys is.

11/6/12. 12oz bottle from Publix. Lightly hazy light amber/dark orange pour with barely a small off-white head on tap that fades to a ring and barely laces. Faint aroma of toasted biscuits, light caramel, and a hint of chalk and herbal notes. The spruce comes through more in the flavor in an almost tingly herbal note, but it’s still somewhat subtle. Otherwise we see biscuits, bread, and caramel. Eh.

Doesn’t smell that great. A bit off. The flavor is just ho-hum. Somewhat English strong but really at most just okay.

Pours gold into a Sam glass. White head with good retention recedes to skim surface. Sweet caramel, grass and wood aromas. Dry with earthy caramel upfront turning to sweet marshmallow before the mild bitter twig finish.

ChainGangGuy (4366) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - JAN 1, 2013
Appearance: Pours a hazed, copper-amber body with a one-third-inch, white head.

Smell: Under-toasted biscuit tops, a flash of bitterish herbs, and only the faintest blip of spruce on the radar screen. A little dull from an aromatic standpoint.

Taste: Shaky biscuit maltiness, minor toastiness, and very lightly caramelized sugars. Doesn’t quite yield any lemon, any herbiness, and just a should shrug-equivalent of spruce character. Modest bitterness. Dry, seemingly unclean finish. Pretty dull tastewise, too.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Without the spruce, standing alone as an ESB, it doesn’t fare too well, really. Add the spruce gimmick, it’s not much better. Lackluster offering.

Aurelius (4125) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JAN 4, 2013
Buttery, slightly doggy, light citrus, sweetish aroma. Bad label, standard longneck, almost clear golden ale, thin clingy white head. Very clean drinking. Lightly briny, moderately bitter, pleasantly sweet and honeyish. Silky mouth, quick, nice brisk finish with some oregano.
