2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
11/6/12. 12oz bottle from Publix. Lightly hazy light amber/dark orange pour with barely a small off-white head on tap that fades to a ring and barely laces. Faint aroma of toasted biscuits, light caramel, and a hint of chalk and herbal notes. The spruce comes through more in the flavor in an almost tingly herbal note, but it’s still somewhat subtle. Otherwise we see biscuits, bread, and caramel. Eh.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Doesn’t smell that great. A bit off. The flavor is just ho-hum. Somewhat English strong but really at most just okay.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Clear golden with a copperish-tint, under a foamy white head, great lacing. Nice aroma of floral and herbal hoppiness, a dash of honey, earthy malts, and golden grains. Bright floral and herbal flavor that’s medium bodied and ’spritzy’. Flavor starts like spruce and flowers, with a little bit of a grassy hop tone, followed by some earthy honey and blonde grain notes. Mild finish thats kinda herbal and pollen-y.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Appearance: Pours a hazed, copper-amber body with a one-third-inch, white head.
Smell: Under-toasted biscuit tops, a flash of bitterish herbs, and only the faintest blip of spruce on the radar screen. A little dull from an aromatic standpoint.
Taste: Shaky biscuit maltiness, minor toastiness, and very lightly caramelized sugars. Doesn’t quite yield any lemon, any herbiness, and just a should shrug-equivalent of spruce character. Modest bitterness. Dry, seemingly unclean finish. Pretty dull tastewise, too.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Overall: Without the spruce, standing alone as an ESB, it doesn’t fare too well, really. Add the spruce gimmick, it’s not much better. Lackluster offering.
