4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 10, 2013
Keg @ Free Trade Inn, Newcastle
This just isn’t hitting the top spot for me, it’s very good just not fantastic 8/4/8/4/16 4.0 ---- so adjusted to 4.2
Keg @ The York Tap, York 9/4/9/4/18
Appearance Black...frothy tan head...good lacing to the glass bottom
Aroma Complex aroma of roasted malts, some coffee, bit of chocolate, pine hops, citrus hops, resin. grapefruit, superb fresh aroma
Taste Rich dark roasted malts, espresso coffee, some chocolate, lots of hops - citrus, resin, spicy, piney. Superb flavour, dangerously moreish and enough stout character to make it an imperial stout and not a black IPA.
Palate carbonation perfect for the abv......great mouthfeel...full bodied...rich..complex. Finish - bitter..roasted malt...hoppy...piney.
Overall This is simply world-class. A wonderful imperial stout, the hoppy character blending well but still very much a stout. Myself and my friend were immensely impressed with this beer. A stunning achievement by Magic Rock.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Keg at Craft Beer Co. It pours opaque black with a thin beige head. The nose is dark chocolate, fresh coffee, dark caramel, tobacco and varnish. The taste is dark chocolate, ash, caramel, espresso coffee, roasted malt, smoke, tobacco, liquorice, salted caramel and some alcohol warmth in the finish. Full body and flavour, moderate carbonation and great balance. Delicious!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From tap at Craft. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty and breadish. Light liquorice touch. Medium sweet, liqourice and dark roasted malty. Lingering dense liqourice into a medium dry/vague sweet and bitter finish.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A solid but strangely soulless imperial stout. It’s great - like an amped up version of the magic rock regular stout and carries through the usual flavours. But not much else - it’s really good but needs something to push it through.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap. Dark Art’s bigger brother. Pours deep brown with hardly any head to speak of. The nose is of coffee, bitter chocolate, a bit of black pepper. The taste is bittersweet and heavy. The mouthfeel is weighty. This beer’s thick and demands attention. A very worthy imperial stout that’ll knock you off your chair if you’re not careful.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the brewery. Grappa heat in espresso, shiny chocolate crack aroma. More of that all in the taste. There’s a herbal spur in the side of the massively smooth malty flank. You know how I said Magic Rock ought to take Dark Arts and stitch a bigger pair of bollocks onto it? That’s what they’ve gone and done.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Off tap at the Sheffield tap. Pours black with a thin tanned head. Masses of coffee and charcoal aroma. Incredibly hoppy palate and taste for an imperial stout. Lasting bitterness on the old tongue. Genuinely delightful.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2013 Test Batch bottle at home ... deep black ... only thinest tan lacing ... deep dark coffee roast ... deep solid roast ... barest hint of charcoal nose ... good body with just the right amount of carbonation (you listening Chris) to carry the big abv ... dark roast malts ... again heavy dark chocolate and a massive amount of coffee ... some of which is just a little too bitter for me ... soft spicy hop... little reminiscent of the Yeti ... mellow chocolate linger .... with a deep roast profile ... This is definitely impressive and a beer i so much want to see in cask and i definitely want to revisit when it gets its official bottle release as i can only imagine it would get better.
