Dark Arts blends 4 malts and bags of whole hops to deliver a decadently deep and indulgent experience. A luxuriously smooth mouthfeel, is followed by spicy hop notes and full flavours of chocolate, liquorice, blackberries and figs. The finish is rich and satisfying with a lingering roasted bitterness. Our stout will convert you to the dark side.

Cask at Sheffield Tap. Darkest reddy brown. Beige, thin but tight, creamy head. Aroma is bonfire toffee. Roasted coffee beans too. Some stewed fruit also. Taste is sticky sweet initially, quickly giving way to a dry, then bitter finish. The alcohol makes itself known, but doesn’t distract. A stout that warrants a session (albeit a short, slightly pissed one!).

Pours black with a foamy head and solid carbonation. Roasty chocolate malts the main flavour in the aroma, a hint of coffee and cream, not too bitter. Very good.

Aroma has lots of dark ripe fruits, sweet dark bread, suryp, bit coffee, malty. Deep dark brown/black with long creamy light brown head and nice lacing. Round soft feel with nice kick from dry roasting, long dry finish, medium to full body, dry and bitter, soft carbonation. Well-done tasty stout that has good balance, nice palate and tasty and nuanced pure flamvors with enough body.Enjoyed.

Black poor with beige head. Roast malts with coffee and just a touch of liquorice coming through. May be come fig but then I might just be imagining that from reading the deScription. Tasty well balanced stout over all.

Tap (keg). Black with a pale beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, prunes, mace, ginger. Medium bodied, carbonation is not that high but still lower would suit. Light chocolate sweetness, modest roast, licorice, coffee, dried fruit. Quite dry finish with flowers and spices. Good, but probably not flattered by the keg.

On tap @ Haand Festival 2013. Pours an onyx black body with a medium beige head. Nose is ashes, licorice, dry chocolate and hints of coffee. Taste is licorice, ashes, chocolate, hints of leather and coffee. Full body, medium to high carbonation. Nice, but lacks the proverbial "extra mile".

My Bottom Line:
This New World Stout shares plenty of roasted malts upon which citrusy hops, raisins and grapey edges bounce, leading to an almost smoke-y, pepper-y finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy sheet of foam covers the pure blackness, lacing nicely.
-The dark chocolate undercurrent in the finish is really nice.
-There are lots of flavours in this one, but I didn’t find them to be perfectly harmonious (citrusy edges with roastiness?).
-In a blind test, I would have this was from an American brewery.
-I think I would like this better on cask as the malts would have more room to express. The biting carbonation from the tap makes the hops a little too brash for my tastes in Stout.

On tap at Craft Beer Co., Brighton.
