3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap (keykeg) Sheffield Tap 20/07/11. There’s something about a pint of Double IPA at the arse-end of an evening. A statement of no return. A declaration that I now give my tastebuds over to a beer so it can have its wicked way with them and damn the consequences.
And it’s... dense. Not chewy - none of that overtly-crystal sweetness that makes beers like this seem like hard work to drink for me. Just concentrated, slabs of pine and spice, aromas of steeped fruits with the occasional whiff of a well-matured mango chutney.
The great thing about ordering a pint was allowing the flavours to uncurl. The keg temperature doesn’t help the beer, but flavours that started out as distinct country cousins at the beginning eventually intermarried into something refreshingly incestuous.
Or is that just the bollocks I write having downed a pint of it? I’ll have to wait til it gets bottled, get the banjo out and try it all over again...

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A mid amber beer with a frothy white head. A really grassy, almost earthy aroma with just a hint of citrus. Dry mouthfeel. The taste is a little more forgiving, yes the grassy element is there, but the lemon and lime citrus fruit comes through more, also bringing a piney resinous flavour. The finish is long a grassy.
Tasted at BierCaB, Barcelona.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Tap at Volo. Hazy golden pour with a thin head. The nose is awesome. Really bright and tropical. Notes of mango, pineapple and some really juicy notes. It’s got a lot of lean crackery malt along with a very soft fruitiness. Really quite juicy and delicious. Bright and well-balanced. Could drink a lot of this.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Great balance on this beer. Golden pour with good head and lacing. Not too sweet or boozy tasting. Medium bitter finish. Average carbonation. Well-balanced and super well done. A great example of a beer that’s perfected balance over anything else. Great taste. Tap at Churchkey.

Bottle from BeerRitz courtesy of the parents. Pours hazy amber with an off-white head. Nice big resinous pine aroma. Juicy tropical fruit taste at first in grapefruit and bitter pine in the finish. A decent bit of caramel malt in the background and a good full mouth feel. Nice beer.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours hazy orange with ringed white head. Candied orange is front and centre. Contributing notes of pine, grapefruit and some tropical hues.
Taste is initially very sweet tropical fruit, before some orange-marmalade and a whiff of pine. Bitterness is light and soft. Balance not quite there for me, needs a little more malt character...oh and a little more hop character in the bitterness. Nevertheless, a strapping beer.
