COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

[keg at the Hanging Bat, Edinburgh] How have I not rated Magic 8 Ball until now? Blackish brown pour, thick, cream-coloured head. The aroma is deep and malty, with leather and piney hop combining, although somewhat muted due to the cold keg serve. On the taste, first flavours are cold coffee, leather and roasted chocolate malt, before the hops arrive as orange and lemon, pine and resin. Great Black IPA [16012013]

Aroma: Mild dusty hop aroma. Juicy orange notes.

Appearance: Very dark brown with a medium off-white head. Nice lacing.

Taste: Well balanced. Coffee with fruit notes. The taste isn’t very powerful.

Palate: Medium body with an oily texture. Light carbonation.

Overall: A decent Black IPA, but I’ve had better (namely Thornbridge’s Raven, Brewdog’s Libertine Black Ale and Moor’s Illusion).

Via cask at the Hanging Bat before Christmas. A super beer but despite it all its the mouthfeel/taste which conquers all. The perfect balance between chewy hebal and tobacco qualities on the palate. Greatness.

On tap at Kick. It pours a beautiful light tan, finger-thick head over a more or less black body. Nice lacings. The aroma is quite roasted, with chocolate, resins, clementine and coffee. It’s rather bitter in the mouth, dry and full-bodied, with a pleasant level of carbonation. Dark chocolate, cold coffee and a nice hoppy impact, although not as evident as in the aroma. Lasting finish. A tasteful and pleasant beer, I could easily finish a few of these. 121116

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 10 Sep 2012) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with liquorice, burnt malt, grapefruit and resin. Roasted, malty taste with notes of liquorice, dark rye bread, pine needles, grapefruit and a slightly minty finish with a solid, piney bitterness. More than medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Very nice and tasty.
