Black IPA seems to be flavour of the month. Pours black (surprise) with a decent white head. Malt and hops combine on the nose along with a touch of chocolate. Hoppy, citrus flavour with malt in the background.

On tap @ Cardinal. As expected, black as night with a perfect creamy tan head. Nice aromas of fruits and mid roastiness. Flavors of clean citrusy hops complimented with a mild roastiness. A really good black IPA.

Keg at Brewdog Glasgow. Great hop profile on the nose and a rich fruity bite in the mouth. The smoky malt at the back coupled with the fruit makes for an interesting and drinkable beer. My favourite of the current Magic Rock brews.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle at home. Pours ebony black - pitch black with a creamy tight cafe-creme head. Big kick of grilled pineapple and lychee on the nose, an inviting floral, grassy hoppines. Slick and oily on the palate with a rounded smooth but subtle alcohol warmth. There is an intense fruity bitterness like charred pineapple which fills the mouth completely before being replaced with a faint coffee chocolate flavour all covered with plum, date and raisin. This leaves a dry residue on the tongue before those dark fruits re-emerge in decreasing surging waves. The aftertaste lingers in a dry dark tropical afterglow. A beautifully crafted and complex beer.

Nice roasty quality with the typical hoppiness one comes to expect from Magic Rock. Coffee, roasted malts, tropical fruits and pine. My favorite style, and this one doesn’t fail to impress.

The first black IPA ive had and it is excellent. far more hop punch than a lot of regular IPAs out there and with that colour, you’re just njot expecting it. the maltiness offsets brilliantly against the tropical hit of the hops. great beer.

Strewth! A black IPA ... still you lives and learns. Looks like a stout. Then you raise the glass and there’s a huge pungent hop aroma, a bit grapefruity with a hint of mentholish, detergentish smell (but in a good way). Properly bitter IPA, but with a disconcerting coffee note. Long dry finish. Wouldn’t like it any more bitter than this. Interesting fusion of styles which overall I rather like.
