Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

Bottle. Pours near black with a tan head. A really good black IPA, it manages to balance the dark malts and IPA hops perfectly. Very good.

Alla spina all’IBF. Colore nero impenetrabile, shiuma fine e mediam persistente. Aromi molti intensi di frutta tropčicale, tostature leggere ma percettibile. Al palato corpo medio, alcool molto ben nascosto. sentori di frutta tropicale, molto fresca e beverina.

Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits, Pershore Road, Birmingham. Unlike some other black IPAs this beer’s colour is befitting of the name. It has an inviting aroma of roasted malts, toffee and a little elderflower. If there was a category for bitterness this would get the full 5 out of 5; it tastes more strongly of coffee than coffee with an extremely long, unrelentingly bitter finish and a rough, slightly gritty mouthfeel. Unfortunately for me, I don’t enjoy the taste of coffee and I prefer my beers with a modicum of sweetness to balance things out. This presents me with a dilemma: I can appreciate this is a well crafted beer - full of character, aromas and flavour; however, drinking beer is meant to be about enjoyment and, truth be told, I didn’t find this particularly drinkable.

Via cask at the Hanging Bat before Christmas. A super beer but despite it all its the mouthfeel/taste which conquers all. The perfect balance between chewy hebal and tobacco qualities on the palate. Greatness.

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2012 33cl bottle. Pours jet black with big frothy tan head, plenty of lacing. Aroma full of pine, citrus, light tropical notes - a real C-hop hit; slight roasted and coffee notes in there too. Taste is much more on the dark side with coffee, molasses, roasted barley as well as those juicy hop notes - great balance. Full, silky mouthfeel, lovely lasting aftertaste - an appealing mix of both roasted notes and bitter hops - great BIPA.

This is up there. Really is quite splendid. Black and pale, like my arms. You should see what I’ve got planned next. Love Magic Rock.

Creamy beige full lasting head. Dark brown colour. Aroma is moderately malty with fruity (roasted apples and grapefruit) and light milk chocolate notes. Flavor is malty too with light coffee and light dried fruits tones, ending in a smooth moderately smoky finish. Medium to full bodied

On tap @ Homo Sibaris bar, served in Shaker. Pours deep dark brown, almost black, with yellowish creamy crown on top. Orange peel and caramel on the nose, some toasty notes. The flavour is mostly citrus and pine (specially the aftertaste), but one also gets roasted malts and dark chocolate. The palate is dry as expected, not that fruity IMO. Medium body, good carbonation. A really good job overall, no disappointment.

Pours a slightly cloudy dark brown with red highlights and one finger of off white creamy head. Strong peach and a bit of citrus on the nose. Taste is citrus, mild hop bitterness, more peach, smoke. Lots of lacing and good head retention. Really nice beer.
