COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

From bottle. Pours as good as black with bubbly tan head. Wowee the smell is tidy, lots of grapefruit (Nelson?) and mango, some resinous aroma also. Similar taste, little malt on the finish. Well bittered. The hops really dominate. It’s..........Delicious!

Draught at William K, Annankatu, Helsinki. Pours really dark brown in color with a creamy, slightly tan head. Pine, citrus and notes of coffee in aroma. Quite nice mix of these here. Roasted coffee notes in taste with some citric fruityness lingering beneath. Feels pretty dark, even if there is that fruity element present. Has even got a nice, slightly sweet chocolatey vibe towards the finish. Pretty nice one, even if it feels a bit too sweet from time to time. Leaves one with a quite roasted coffee bitterness in the end.

Keg at the Southampton Arms. Dark brown colour with a thick creamy golden head. Aroma is lots of pine hops, bit of citrus, orange and grapefruit. Also quite malty, roasty and creamy, bit of chocolate and a whiff of smoke. Texture is very smooth and quite thick. Taste is very roasty, chocolate milk, bit of spice and something burnt. Finish alternates between lingering bitterness and more roasty chocolate maltiness. Really nice.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2014 From my backlog. Black colour with a dense off-white head, good duration and lacing. Aroma has notes of fresh hops with citrus hints and some roasty notes. Flavor is bittery with resins and pine notes, moderate licorice in the finasl with a good bitterness with medium duration.

Tap at Haand festival 2013. Black bodied, beige head. Aroma of roasted malt and tons of fruity hops, light chocolate and salt licorice. Taste is massive citrus hoppy, coffee, leather, dry and clean bitterness, very nicely balanced. Refreshing bitter aftertaste. A great brew!

Bottle from Luvians, St Andrews. A black beer with a fair, light tan head. Aroma is lovely with passion fruit and grapefruit hop characters, presumably Nelson Sauvin. Juicy passion fruit and pineapple hop flavours give way to coffee, roasty malt, burnt toast and chocolate. The flavours are intense but this is a seriously drinkable beer. I would love to try this on cask. Brilliant stuff!

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2014 Sampled at Borefts Beer Festival 2014. THX everyone for sharing today’s beers. Black beer. Nose is mostly hoppy, though little roasted side. Taste is quite bitter and little sweet. Little roasted here again

Aroma: Mild dusty hop aroma. Juicy orange notes.

Appearance: Very dark brown with a medium off-white head. Nice lacing.

Taste: Well balanced. Coffee with fruit notes. The taste isn’t very powerful.

Palate: Medium body with an oily texture. Light carbonation.

Overall: A decent Black IPA, but I’ve had better (namely Thornbridge’s Raven, Brewdog’s Libertine Black Ale and Moor’s Illusion).
