COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

Bottle. Black with beige head. Massively hoppy nose. Flavour is also, enormously hoppy. Like a tropical swamp. Passion fruit, grapefruit and pineapple. Resinous. Mild roasty dark malt flavour permeates the hops. Inevitably bitter finish. A tidy beer.

Draught at bar. Black color, beige head. Bitter taste with hops, roasted malts, citrus, pine and coffee. Bitter finish with coffee and grapefruit. Excellent black IPA.

Bottle at home. Love black ipa’s oh yeah. Almost black with a creamy pale tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, citrus n hops. Flavour is more black ipa goodness. Nailed this in minutes and loved it.

[Bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring] Black with a moderate tan head and a light fizz. Grapefruit and urine up front (fortunately the urine gradually fades as you drink more) with a smear of something tropical. Then the malt flavours come through - soot, tar, tobacco and leather, with peppery hints. Then back to the hops - lots more grapefruit and this time pine and maybe something tropical. Then back to the smokiness, with some peat bog, cocoa and definitely a comfy, patched leather sofa. And then maybe a hint of ginger at the back of the throat. But at the end I think the hops just win the ping pong battle. A fascinating, interesting beer - like Thornbridge Raven, it pulls off the rather unique trick of mystically switching in turn between the malt and the hop flavours rather than mixing them together. However, I didn’t think the hops in this worked quite as well as those in Raven, and thus it gets a lower mark. Still a damn tasty beer though.

Bottle. Purple-tan medium head. Jet black body. Massive whiff of grapefruit and passionfruit. Some smokiness. Good amount of lasting bitterness which leads to a dry finish. Decent amount of body.

Bottle, mybrewerytap.com. The beautiful ripe mango aroma is utterly at odds with this beer’s black appearance, but it really works. Against a background of smoky roasted malt the opposing flavours combine to produce a full bodied hop lovers dream, with plenty for the stout fans too. Lovely oily hop aroma comes in late on and there’s a long, rich bitter finish.

Keg at The Hanging Bat, Edinburgh. Pours a dark reddy brown with an off white head. Hoppy tropical fruit aroma - pineapple, mango, passion fruit. Light to medium body, fruity with some candy and trop flavours, bitter chocolate, hint of coffee with nice grapefruit bitterness. Good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: OCT 31, 2012 Bottle at home. Deep black pour, quite stout-like with a creamy tan head. Nose is big on hops, grapefruit, passion fruit, hint of mocha coffee. Similar flavours, intensely hoppy, juicy grapefruit, smooth rich mouthfeel and a resinous hop finish. Fantastic example of the style.

Keg @ Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Pours black with intense roasted malts, tongue-numbing liquorice and a little too much vegetal notes for me. Couldn’t get much of the tropical fruits unfortunately but still this is an evil tasting beer with lots going on, like a stormy black cloud.

(330ml Bottle) The most reserved ’Black IPA’ I think ive drunk , not that ive had loads, but this feels more resemblance to an American stout with the customary abundant use of aromatic hops , than a marring of two styles. Deep jet black, attractive beige head. Nose is hoppy and dark ,basically . On the palate, resiny bitter hops are tropical ,floral ,zesty and bitter ...dark malts are a bit subdued but ’there’ in muted sense .
