COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

Nice roasty quality with the typical hoppiness one comes to expect from Magic Rock. Coffee, roasted malts, tropical fruits and pine. My favorite style, and this one doesn’t fail to impress.

Keg at The Hope, Carshalton. Nearly black, big foamy off-white head. Aroma is piney hop, grass, bubblegum. Body is medium, a bit foamy, a touch spritzy. Taste is lightly medicinal, strong Turkish delight, pine, liquorice allsorts. Strong flavours, but not my favoured ones. Good beer though.

Poured from keg at Grove Inn. Almost black as pitch. Shiny naked surface, dotted spots on the glass. Aroma of roasted, earthy malts. Dark fruity and dark honeyed flavours alongside coffee grounds leading to a long-lived ending of malty bitterness. Well bodied. A lovely, tasty drink (Huddersfield 09.07.2014).

On tap, but I forgot which pub it was. Hoppy smell with grapefruit and citrus, dark bread and chocolate. Similar taste. Nice.

Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn tap: Pours black with a beige head. Aroma is citrus, spice, chocolate, and fresh coffee. Taste is quite fruity with a moderate amount of hop bitterness. The backbone of the roasty malts blends in well with the IPA character. A well-executed example of the style.

Keg at York Tap. Pours near-black, thick tan head. Aromas of roasted coffee and orange, some pine. Big hop flavour, lots of roast bitterness too. Lots going on, rich mouthfeel. Finishes with a lingering orange bitterness. Very nice.

Grifo. Vaso Nonic @ Freiburg (L´Hospitalet-Barcelona). On-tap. Nonic glass @ Freiburg (L´Hospitalet-Barcelona). Pitch black color & deep ruby tints to the light headed by tan foam. Creamy crown & some lasting lacing. Herbal, burnt aromas & black bread hints. Licorice, bitter & roasted flavors at first. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Oily & dried mouthfeel. Slight buttery flavors, sharp hops, resins & wood resolves in a long bitter finish. Involving bitterness linger into the aftertaste. Refreshing & flavorful!!
